Airtel SIM Swap or eSIM: How to Activate

Need to replace a damaged Airtel SIM, activate an eSIM, or upgrade to a 5G SIM? This guide covers all SIM swap and eSIM activation methods with complete steps for both iPhone and Android users.

When Do You Need a SIM Swap?

  • Damaged or broken SIM โ€” SIM card is physically damaged
  • Lost or stolen SIM โ€” need a replacement on the same number
  • SIM size change โ€” switching from standard to nano SIM (or vice versa)
  • 4G to 5G upgrade โ€” older SIM needs replacement for 5G support
  • Moving to eSIM โ€” switching from physical SIM to embedded SIM

Method 1: Physical SIM Replacement (SIM Swap)

Documents Required

  • Aadhaar card (original for verification)
  • Old SIM card (if available โ€” not mandatory for lost SIM)
  • SIM swap form (available at the store)

Steps

  1. Visit the nearest Airtel store โ€” find one at airtel.in/store
  2. Carry your Aadhaar card โ€” original is required for biometric verification
  3. Fill the SIM swap form at the store
  4. Complete Aadhaar-based biometric verification (fingerprint)
  5. Receive the new SIM โ€” it will have the same mobile number
  6. Wait for activation โ€” the new SIM activates within 2-4 hours
  7. You will receive an SMS confirming the SIM swap

Fees

Type Fee
SIM replacement (damaged/lost) Free to โ‚น25 (varies by store)
SIM size change (nano/micro) Free at most stores
4G to 5G SIM upgrade Free

Note: During the swap process, your old SIM will stop working. The new SIM will activate within 2-4 hours. During this time, you won't be able to make or receive calls.

Important Tips

  1. Backup OTP-linked services โ€” during SIM swap, you won't receive OTPs for 2-4 hours. Plan accordingly.
  2. eSIM + Physical SIM โ€” on dual-SIM phones, you can use eSIM for Airtel and keep the physical SIM slot for another operator.
  3. eSIM transfer between phones โ€” when switching phones, you need to re-do the eSIM activation process. The eSIM doesn't transfer automatically.
  4. Keep your Aadhaar linked โ€” SIM swap requires Aadhaar biometric verification. Ensure your mobile number is linked to Aadhaar.
  5. Report lost SIM immediately โ€” call 198 to block your SIM before requesting a replacement to prevent misuse.
