Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drive with LL (learner's licence)? Yes — with conditions: Must be accompanied by a person who has a valid DL for the vehicle class. Must display 'L' board on the vehicle. No solo driving on highways. LL valid for 6 months.

My DL expired 3 years ago — can I still renew online? Yes — if less than 5 years since expiry, online renewal is possible on Sarathi portal. You may need medical certificate (Form 1A). If more than 5 years: Appear for fresh LL test + DL test (essentially start fresh).

I moved to a new state — how to get new state DL? You don't need a new state DL. Indian DL is valid across all states. If you want your address updated: Apply for address change on Sarathi portal. No need to get a fresh DL from new state.

International driving — is Indian DL valid abroad? Indian DL is valid in some countries for a limited period (varies by country). For long-term driving abroad: Apply for International Driving Permit (IDP) at your RTO or via Sarathi portal → IDP valid in 100+ countries for 1 year.

Driving test failed at RTO — how many attempts? No limit on attempts. Book a new test slot after failing. Pay test fee again for each attempt. Practice more before the next attempt — figure-of-8 and H-route are most commonly failed.
