How to Register on e-Shram Portal — Unorganized Worker Card & Benefits

If you are a daily wage worker, street vendor, domestic helper, construction worker, or any unorganized worker in India, the e-Shram portal is made for you. This guide explains everything — what is e-Shram, who can register, what benefits you get, and how to apply step by step.

What is e-Shram?

e-Shram is a national portal launched by the Ministry of Labour & Employment, Government of India. The official website is eshram.gov.in.

It is a national database for unorganized workers. The goal is to register all unorganized workers in India so that the government can:

  • Know how many unorganized workers are in the country
  • Deliver welfare schemes and benefits directly to workers
  • Provide social security and insurance cover

When you register on e-Shram, you get a UAN (Universal Account Number) — a unique 12-digit number. This is your e-Shram card.

Who is an Unorganized Worker?

An unorganized worker is any person who works but does not have a formal employment contract, regular salary, or employer-provided social security. Examples include:

  • Construction workers (mistry, labour, painter, plumber)
  • Street vendors and hawkers
  • Domestic workers (maid, cook, driver)
  • Agricultural labourers and farmers
  • Gig workers (delivery persons, app-based drivers)
  • Auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers
  • Fishermen and fish workers
  • Beedi and brick kiln workers
  • Washer men and women (dhobi)
  • Rag pickers and waste collectors
  • ASHA and Anganwadi workers
  • Mid-day meal workers
  • Any self-employed or daily wage worker

If you do not get PF (Provident Fund) or ESI from your employer, you are most likely an unorganized worker.

Benefits of e-Shram Card

1. Accidental Insurance (₹2 Lakh)

Every registered e-Shram worker gets accidental insurance under the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY):

Situation Amount
Death due to accident ₹2,00,000
Full permanent disability ₹2,00,000
Partial permanent disability ₹1,00,000

2. Access to Government Schemes

Your e-Shram card helps you get benefits from many central and state government schemes, including ration, housing, pension, and loan schemes.

3. Portability Across States

If you move from one state to another for work, your e-Shram card and UAN number remain the same. Your benefits follow you.

4. Emergency Relief

During COVID-19, the government used the e-Shram database to send direct cash transfers to unorganized workers. Future relief can also reach you through this registration.
