What is e-NAM?

e-NAM (Electronic National Agriculture Market) is a pan-India electronic trading portal launched by the Government of India to connect Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMCs) across the country into a unified national market. The platform is managed by Small Farmers' Agribusiness Consortium (SFAC) under the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare.

Launched on 14 April 2016, e-NAM enables farmers, traders, and buyers to trade agricultural commodities online — removing geographical barriers and ensuring transparent price discovery through competitive bidding.

Key Fact: Over 1,360 mandis across 23 states and 4 UTs are integrated on e-NAM, with 1.76 crore+ farmers and 2.5 lakh+ traders registered on the platform.

How Does e-NAM Work?

The e-NAM platform works as an online marketplace that digitises the mandi trading process:

  1. Farmer brings produce to an e-NAM-linked mandi
  2. Quality testing is done at the mandi using assaying equipment
  3. Lot details are uploaded on the e-NAM portal with quality parameters
  4. Online bidding begins — traders from the same mandi, other mandis, or other states can bid
  5. Highest bid wins — farmer can accept or reject the winning bid
  6. Payment is processed electronically to the farmer's bank account
  7. Gate pass is generated for produce dispatch

This system replaces the traditional opaque auction process with transparent, competitive online bidding.

Benefits of e-NAM for Farmers

  • Better prices — Competitive bidding from multiple buyers across the country drives prices up
  • Transparent trading — Real-time price information and open auction process
  • Direct payment — Money credited directly to bank account via electronic transfer
  • Reduced middlemen — Farmers can access more buyers without agents taking a cut
  • Quality-based pricing — Scientific assaying ensures fair price based on actual quality
  • Market access — Sell to buyers beyond the local mandi
  • Real-time mandi prices — Check commodity rates across India on the portal or app
  • No more delayed payments — Electronic payment within 24–72 hours of sale

If you already have a PM Kisan beneficiary account or a Kisan Credit Card, the same bank account can be linked to e-NAM for receiving payments.

How to Sell Produce on e-NAM

Step-by-Step Process

Step 1: Arrive at the Mandi Bring your produce to any e-NAM-integrated mandi. Get a gate entry with details of the commodity, quantity, and vehicle number.

Step 2: Quality Assaying Your produce undergoes quality testing using scientific equipment. Parameters like moisture content, foreign matter, and grain size are recorded and uploaded to the e-NAM portal.

Step 3: Lot Creation The mandi creates a lot on the e-NAM system with your produce details and quality report. This lot becomes visible to all registered traders.

Step 4: Online Bidding Traders place bids online. You can see all bids in real-time on the portal or app. The bidding window is typically 1–4 hours depending on the mandi's rules.

Step 5: Accept or Reject Once bidding closes, you can accept the highest bid or reject it if the price is unsatisfactory. There is no compulsion to sell.

Step 6: Weighment & Payment After acceptance, your produce is weighed. The trader pays through the e-NAM system, and the amount is credited to your linked bank account.

Payment Process on e-NAM

Payments on e-NAM are processed electronically:

  • Mode: RTGS / NEFT / direct bank transfer
  • Timeline: Within 24 to 72 hours of sale confirmation
  • Deductions: Mandi cess and commission charges (as per state APMC rules) are deducted before payment
  • Transparency: Full payment details are visible on the portal — sale price, deductions, and net amount

Farmers with a Kisan Credit Card can use the same bank account for receiving e-NAM payments, making it easier to manage agricultural finances.
