FASTag Not Working at Toll Plaza: How to Fix Scanning, Deduction & Balance Issues
FASTag uses RFID technology to deduct toll charges automatically when your vehicle passes through a toll plaza. But sometimes it doesn't work โ the tag doesn't beep, shows insufficient balance despite having funds, or deducts the wrong amount. This guide covers every common FASTag toll plaza problem and how to fix it.
Common FASTag Problems at Toll Plazas
- No beep at all โ FASTag not detected by the scanner
- Beep but no deduction โ tag scanned but toll not deducted, barrier doesn't open
- "Insufficient balance" error despite having balance
- Double deduction โ toll charged twice for one crossing
- Wrong amount charged โ vehicle class mismatch
- FASTag blacklisted or deactivated โ tag rejected at toll
- Tag linked to wrong vehicle โ registration mismatch
FASTag Not Scanning at Toll โ No Beep
If your FASTag doesn't beep or get detected at the toll plaza:
Possible Causes
- FASTag sticker damaged or peeled off โ RFID chip may be damaged
- Sticker placed incorrectly โ must be on the windshield's top-centre area, inside the vehicle
- Metallic or tinted windshield โ blocks RFID signals
- Toll plaza scanner malfunction โ reader equipment may be faulty
- FASTag expired or deactivated โ inactive tags won't scan
How to Fix
- Check sticker placement โ FASTag must be affixed on the inside of the windshield, at the top-centre, with no obstruction
- Inspect for damage โ if the sticker is torn, peeling, or bent, get a replacement from your issuer bank
- Tinted windshield? โ ask your FASTag issuer for a headlamp-mounted tag (for vehicles with metallic-coated windshields)
- Try another lane โ the scanner in your lane may be faulty. Use a different FASTag lane
- Contact toll plaza staff โ ask them to manually scan or check their reader
- Check tag status โ log into your FASTag issuer app and verify the tag is active (not blacklisted or expired)
Tip: If toll plaza equipment is faulty, you should not be charged double (cash) toll. Note the plaza name, lane number, and time โ file a complaint if overcharged.
"Insufficient Balance" But Balance Is Available
This is one of the most frustrating FASTag issues. Your app shows sufficient balance, but the toll plaza shows "low balance" or "insufficient balance."
Why This Happens โ NPCI Mapper Issue
FASTag transactions route through the NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) NETC system. The mapper links your FASTag to your wallet/bank account. If the mapper is not updated:
- Your recharge shows in the app but the NPCI system still reflects old (lower) balance
- Recent recharge may not have synced with the NETC central system
- Your FASTag issuer bank may have a technical sync delay
How to Fix
- Wait 30 minutes after recharge before entering a toll plaza โ allow mapper sync
- Check balance on NPCI โ some issuer apps show both "wallet balance" and "NETC balance." Ensure the NETC balance is updated
- Contact your FASTag issuer bank helpline and ask them to update/refresh your NPCI mapper
- Do a small recharge (โน100) โ this sometimes forces a mapper refresh
- If the problem persists, raise a complaint with your issuer and request NPCI mapper correction
Double Deduction at Toll โ How to Get Refund
If toll is deducted twice for a single crossing:
Step 1: Verify the Double Deduction
- Open your FASTag issuer app (Paytm, PhonePe, ICICI iMobile, etc.)
- Go to Transaction History / Passbook
- Check if two transactions appear for the same toll plaza within minutes
- Note the transaction IDs, amounts, date, and toll plaza name
Step 2: Raise a Complaint
Option A โ Through your FASTag issuer:
- Contact your issuer bank's customer care or use the app's grievance section
- Share transaction details and request reversal of the duplicate charge
- Refund is typically processed within 7-15 working days
Option B โ Through NHAI Complaint Portal:
- Visit https://grievances.nhai.gov.in/
- Select "Toll Plaza Related" complaint
- Enter vehicle number, FASTag ID, toll plaza name, and transaction details
- Upload screenshot of double deduction from your app
- You'll receive a complaint ID โ track status on the same portal
Option C โ MyFASTag App:
- Download the My FASTag app by IHMCL
- Register with your vehicle number
- View transactions and raise a dispute directly
Important: You must raise the complaint within 90 days of the transaction for refund eligibility.
FASTag Blacklisted or Deactivated โ Reasons and Reactivation
Why FASTag Gets Blacklisted
- KYC not completed โ incomplete or expired KYC documents
- Negative balance for extended period โ prolonged zero/low balance
- Vehicle registration expired โ linked RC is no longer valid
- Duplicate FASTag โ multiple tags issued for the same vehicle (only the latest remains active; older ones get blacklisted)
- Issuer bank deactivation โ bank closed the FASTag account due to inactivity
- Fraud or misuse flagged โ suspicious activity on the tag
How to Reactivate
- Check blacklist status โ log into your issuer app or call their helpline
- Complete KYC โ if KYC is the reason, submit updated documents. See our FASTag KYC update guide
- Recharge your FASTag โ maintain a minimum balance of โน150-200
- Remove duplicate tags โ if you have multiple FASTags, deactivate the old ones through your issuer. Only one active FASTag per vehicle is allowed
- Contact issuer bank โ request reactivation with your vehicle RC, FASTag ID, and valid KYC
- Get a new FASTag โ if the old tag cannot be reactivated, apply for a new one from any issuer bank
Note: If your FASTag is blacklisted, you'll be charged double toll (cash penalty) at toll plazas. Fix this urgently.
Wrong Vehicle Class Charged at Toll
Toll charges vary by vehicle class (car/jeep/van, LCV, bus, truck, multi-axle). If you're charged a higher class:
How to Dispute
- Check your FASTag registration โ log into your issuer app and verify the vehicle class linked to your FASTag
- If vehicle class is wrong in FASTag records:
- Contact your issuer bank with your RC (Registration Certificate)
- Request vehicle class correction
- Provide RC copy showing correct vehicle type
- If vehicle class is correct but toll plaza overcharged:
- Note the toll plaza name, lane, date, time, and amount
- File a complaint on NHAI Grievance Portal
- Or call NHAI helpline: 1033
- Refund timeline: 7-15 working days after complaint resolution
FASTag Linked to Wrong Vehicle โ How to Fix
If your FASTag is mapped to a different vehicle number:
- Contact your FASTag issuer bank immediately
- Provide:
- Your FASTag ID / barcode number
- Correct vehicle registration number
- Copy of your RC (Registration Certificate)
- Your KYC documents
- The issuer will update the vehicle mapping in the NPCI/NETC system
- This usually takes 24-48 hours to reflect
Note: You cannot change vehicle mapping yourself through most apps. It requires issuer bank intervention.
How to Check FASTag Transaction History
Through Your Issuer App
- Open Paytm / PhonePe / ICICI iMobile / your bank's FASTag app
- Go to FASTag section โ Transaction History or Passbook
- View all toll deductions with date, time, plaza name, and amount
Through My FASTag App (IHMCL)
- Download My FASTag app from Play Store / App Store
- Register using your vehicle number and mobile number
- View complete transaction history across all issuers
Through NETC Website
- Visit the NPCI NETC FASTag portal
- Enter your vehicle number or FASTag ID
- Check recent transactions and balance
Filing a Complaint on NHAI Grievance Portal
For any toll-related dispute โ overcharging, double deduction, rude staff, FASTag lane not working:
- Visit https://grievances.nhai.gov.in/
- Click "Lodge Grievance"
- Select complaint category: Toll Plaza Related
- Fill in:
- Vehicle number
- Toll plaza name and highway number
- Date and time of incident
- Description of the problem
- Upload supporting documents (screenshots, photos)
- Submit and note your Grievance ID
- Track status using the grievance ID on the same portal
- Alternative: Call NHAI helpline 1033 (24ร7)
Important Tips
- Always maintain โน200+ balance in your FASTag to avoid "insufficient balance" issues at toll
- Wait 30 minutes after recharge before using a toll plaza โ allows NPCI mapper sync
- Keep only ONE active FASTag per vehicle โ duplicate tags cause blacklisting
- Save transaction screenshots โ useful for dispute resolution
- Check FASTag status monthly โ ensure it's active and KYC is valid
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my FASTag beeping but the barrier is not opening?
The tag is scanning but the transaction may be failing due to insufficient NETC balance, blacklisted status, or vehicle class mismatch. Check your issuer app for the exact error.
Can I get a refund for double deduction at toll?
Yes. Raise a complaint through your FASTag issuer app or on the NHAI Grievance Portal. Refunds are processed within 7-15 working days. You must file within 90 days.
My FASTag shows active but doesn't work at toll. Why?
This usually happens due to NPCI mapper sync issues. Contact your issuer bank and ask them to refresh/re-sync your FASTag mapper. Also check if the physical sticker is damaged.
How do I know if my FASTag is blacklisted?
Check your FASTag issuer app โ the tag status will show as "blacklisted" or "inactive." You can also call your issuer's helpline or check on the My FASTag app by IHMCL.
What happens if I don't have FASTag at a toll plaza?
You'll be charged double the toll amount as penalty in cash. FASTag is mandatory for all four-wheelers on national highways since February 2021.
Can I transfer my FASTag to a new vehicle?
No. FASTag is linked to a specific vehicle's registration number. If you sell your vehicle or buy a new one, you need to get a new FASTag for the new vehicle and close the old one.
How long does it take to reactivate a blacklisted FASTag?
Once you resolve the issue (complete KYC, remove duplicates, etc.) and request reactivation, it typically takes 24-72 hours for the tag to become active again.
