What is FASTag?

FASTag is an electronic toll collection system operated by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) using RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology. It enables automatic toll deduction from a prepaid or linked account when your vehicle passes through a toll plaza — without stopping.

FASTag is mandatory for all four-wheeled and above vehicles on national highways. Vehicles without a valid FASTag are charged double the toll amount at designated FASTag lanes.

The system works on the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) programme managed by NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) and IHMCL (Indian Highway Management Company Limited).

Auto-Recharge

Many banks offer auto-recharge — when your FASTag balance falls below a threshold, it automatically recharges from your linked bank account or wallet.

How to Affix FASTag to Vehicle

  1. Clean the windshield inside surface (top centre area)
  2. Peel the adhesive backing of the FASTag sticker
  3. Stick it on the inside of the windshield, behind the rearview mirror
  4. Ensure it's clearly visible from outside and not obstructed
  5. Do not tamper — Removing and re-sticking may damage the RFID chip

If your FASTag is not pre-linked:

  1. Log in to your FASTag issuer's portal
  2. Go to Tag Management → Link Vehicle
  3. Enter vehicle registration number
  4. Upload RC copy
  5. Verify and link

Each FASTag is linked to one vehicle only. If you change vehicles, you need a new FASTag.

You'll be charged double the toll amount. Some toll plazas may also redirect you to a cash lane with additional waiting time.
