Google Pay Money Sent But Not Received โ How to Get a Refund
One of the most stressful UPI issues is when money gets debited from your account but the recipient says they have not received it. This can happen due to a stuck transaction, bank server delays, or a failed settlement between banks. This guide explains what to do step by step.
Why Does This Happen?
When you make a UPI payment on Google Pay, the money flows through multiple systems:
- Your bank debits your account
- NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) routes the transaction
- The recipient's bank credits their account
If any step fails midway, the money may be debited from your account but not credited to the recipient. Common reasons include:
- Bank server timeout โ the sender's bank debited but the receiver's bank did not respond in time
- NPCI routing delay โ the transaction is stuck in NPCI's system
- Transaction pending โ the transaction has not fully completed yet
- Incorrect beneficiary details โ rare with UPI, but possible if the UPI ID is linked to a different account than expected
Step 1: Check the Transaction Status
Before panicking, check the actual status:
- Open Google Pay โ tap on the transaction in your history
- Check if it shows "Completed," "Pending," or "Failed"
- If Pending: Wait. The transaction is still being processed. Most pending transactions resolve within 30 minutes to 2 hours
- If Completed: The money has left your bank. Ask the recipient to check their bank statement (not just the UPI app balance)
- If Failed: The money should be auto-reversed. Check your bank statement
Step 2: Find Your UTR (UPI Transaction Reference) Number
The UTR is the unique tracking ID for your transaction. You will need it for any complaint:
- Open Google Pay โ tap on the transaction
- Look for "UPI Transaction ID" or "UTR Number" โ it is a 12-digit alphanumeric code
- Note it down or take a screenshot
- You can also find the UTR in your bank's SMS alert or net banking transaction details
Step 3: Wait for Auto-Reversal
If the transaction failed midway, NPCI's system automatically reverses the amount:
- Standard timeline: 3-5 business days as per RBI guidelines
- In practice: Most auto-reversals happen within 24-48 hours
- Maximum: Up to 7 working days in rare cases
- Check your bank statement daily โ the reversal will appear as a credit entry
- The reversal amount will match the original transaction amount
Do NOT initiate a new payment assuming the first one failed โ the recipient may receive both payments.
Step 4: Ask the Recipient to Check Their Bank
Sometimes the money is credited but does not show in the recipient's UPI app:
- Ask the recipient to check their bank statement or passbook (not just the UPI app)
- UPI app balance may not refresh instantly โ they should check net banking or call their bank
- If the recipient's bank confirms the credit, the issue is resolved โ the UPI app will eventually sync
Step 5: Raise a Complaint in Google Pay
If auto-reversal does not happen within 3 business days:
- Open Google Pay โ go to transaction history
- Tap on the problematic transaction
- Select "Report a problem" or "Get help"
- Choose the appropriate issue (money debited but not received by recipient)
- Submit the complaint โ Google Pay will investigate with the banks
- You will receive updates in the app and via email
- Note the complaint reference number for follow-up
Step 6: Contact Your Bank Directly
If the Google Pay complaint does not resolve the issue:
- Call your bank's customer care number (found on the back of your debit card or bank website)
- Provide the UTR number, transaction date, amount, and recipient details
- Request them to trace the transaction and confirm if it was settled
- Ask for a written complaint reference number
- Banks are required to resolve UPI complaints within 30 days as per RBI guidelines
Step 7: File an NPCI Dispute
If neither Google Pay nor your bank resolves the issue within 30 days:
- Visit the NPCI UPI dispute redressal page
- You can also write to NPCI at their official email mentioned on npci.org.in
- Provide: UTR number, transaction date, amount, sender and receiver bank details, and details of complaints already filed
- NPCI will coordinate between both banks to resolve the dispute
Step 8: File a Banking Ombudsman Complaint (Last Resort)
If the issue remains unresolved after 30 days:
- Visit the RBI Complaint Management System at https://cms.rbi.org.in
- File a complaint against your bank under the Banking Ombudsman Scheme
- Provide all documentation: UTR number, bank complaint reference, Google Pay complaint reference
- The Ombudsman will investigate and issue a binding decision
- You can claim compensation for the delay as per RBI guidelines
Transaction Status Meanings
| Status | What It Means | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Completed | Money debited and credited successfully | Ask recipient to check bank statement |
| Pending | Transaction is being processed | Wait 2-4 hours; usually auto-resolves |
| Failed | Transaction did not go through | Auto-reversal within 3-5 business days |
| Deemed | Timed out; treated as failed | Auto-reversal will be initiated by NPCI |
Important Tips
- Always save your UTR number for every UPI transaction โ it is your proof
- Do not make a second payment until the first one is confirmed as failed and reversed
- Check your bank statement, not just the Google Pay app, for the most accurate transaction status
- If the recipient claims they did not receive the money, ask them to check with their bank directly
- Keep screenshots of all transaction details and complaint references
FAQs
Q: How long does a Google Pay refund take for a failed transaction? A: Auto-reversals typically happen within 3-5 business days. In most cases, the refund is credited within 24-48 hours. If it takes more than 7 working days, raise a complaint.
Q: The transaction shows "Completed" but the recipient did not get the money. What do I do? A: Ask the recipient to check their bank statement (not just UPI app). If the bank confirms no credit, raise a complaint in Google Pay with the UTR number. The issue is likely between the two banks.
Q: Can I cancel a completed Google Pay UPI transaction? A: No. Once a UPI transaction is completed, it cannot be reversed or cancelled by the sender. You must request the recipient to send the money back, or raise a dispute if it was unauthorized.
Q: What is a UTR number and where do I find it? A: UTR (Unique Transaction Reference) is a 12-digit code assigned to every UPI transaction. Find it in Google Pay by tapping on the transaction, or in your bank's SMS or net banking transaction details.
Q: My money was debited twice for the same transaction. What should I do? A: One of the transactions will likely be auto-reversed. Check your bank statement after 3-5 business days. If both amounts remain debited, raise a complaint with Google Pay and your bank with both UTR numbers.
Q: Can I file a police complaint for UPI transaction issues? A: Transaction failures are banking issues, not criminal matters. Use the complaint process: Google Pay โ Bank โ NPCI โ Banking Ombudsman. However, if you suspect fraud or unauthorized transactions, file a cyber crime complaint at https://cybercrime.gov.in.
