Income Tax Refund Delayed? How to Track and Fix ITR Refund Not Received

You filed your ITR, e-verified it, and now you're waiting for the refund. Days turn to weeks, weeks to months โ€” and the money still hasn't arrived. This is one of the most common tax complaints in India.

Here's how to track your refund and fix every possible issue.

Step 1: Check Your Refund Status

Method A: On Income Tax Portal

  1. Visit incometax.gov.in
  2. Login with PAN and password
  3. Go to e-File โ†’ Income Tax Returns โ†’ View Filed Returns
  4. Select the Assessment Year
  5. Check ITR processing status and refund status

Method B: On NSDL/TIN Portal

  1. Visit tin.tin.nsdl.com/oltas/refund-status-tin.html
  2. Enter your PAN and Assessment Year
  3. Click Submit
  4. Status will show: refund amount, mode (ECS/cheque), date of credit, or failure reason

Status Meanings:

Status What It Means
"Not Determined" ITR not yet processed
"Refund Determined" Refund approved, waiting for disbursement
"Refund Paid" Money sent โ€” check your bank account
"Refund Failure" Bank rejected the credit โ€” action needed
"No Demand No Refund" No refund due (tax paid = tax owed)
"Demand Determined" You owe more tax โ€” no refund
"ITR processed, refund adjusted" Refund set off against outstanding demand

Step 2: Fix "Refund Failed" Issues

Refund failure is the #1 reason people don't receive their money. Common causes:

Bank Account Not Pre-Validated

Since 2023, refunds are credited only to pre-validated bank accounts linked to your PAN.

How to pre-validate:

  1. Login to incometax.gov.in
  2. Go to Profile โ†’ My Bank Accounts
  3. Click "Add Bank Account"
  4. Enter account number, IFSC, account type
  5. Validate via net banking or EVC through bank
  6. Status should show "Validated" with a green tick

Incorrect Bank Details

  • Account number wrong โ†’ Refund bounces back to IT department
  • IFSC code changed (bank merger) โ†’ Credit fails
  • Account closed โ†’ Refund returned

Fix: Update bank details โ†’ Request refund reissue (see below)

Name Mismatch

Your name on PAN card must match the name on your bank account. Even minor differences ("Raj Kumar" vs "RAJKUMAR") can cause failures.

Step 3: Request Refund Reissue

If refund failed:

  1. Login to incometax.gov.in
  2. Go to Services โ†’ "Refund Reissue Request"
  3. Select the Assessment Year
  4. Update bank account details (must be pre-validated)
  5. Submit the reissue request
  6. Refund reissue takes 15-30 additional days

Step 4: Handle "Refund Adjusted Against Demand"

If your refund was adjusted (set off):

  1. Check your Outstanding Tax Demands on the portal
  2. Go to e-File โ†’ Response to Outstanding Tax Demand
  3. You'll see which year's demand was adjusted against your refund
  4. If you disagree with the demand:
    • File "Response to Outstanding Demand" โ†’ Select "Demand is incorrect"
    • Upload supporting documents
    • The demand will be reviewed and if incorrect, your refund will be released

Step 5: Ensure E-Verification Is Complete

A surprisingly common mistake โ€” people file ITR but forget to e-verify. Without verification, your ITR won't be processed and no refund is issued.

Check verification status:

  1. Login โ†’ e-File โ†’ View Filed Returns
  2. If status shows "Pending for e-Verification" โ†’ Verify immediately

How to e-verify:

  • Aadhaar OTP (fastest โ€” takes 1 minute)
  • Net banking (login through bank โ†’ e-verify)
  • Bank account EVC (generate EVC via pre-validated bank)
  • Demat account EVC
  • Physical ITR-V (send signed copy to CPC Bangalore โ€” slowest option, 120 days)

Step 6: ITR Processing Delays

If your ITR hasn't been processed yet:

Normal timeline: 15-45 days after e-verification Reasons for delay:

  • CPC backlog (especially July-October after filing season)
  • ITR selected for scrutiny โ€” refund held
  • Defective return (notice under Section 139(9))
  • Mismatch between TDS claimed and Form 26AS/AIS data

What to do:

  1. Check Form 26AS and AIS on the portal โ€” ensure your TDS matches what you claimed
  2. If there's a mismatch, file a revised return correcting the figures
  3. Check for any notices under Pending Actions โ†’ Compliance

Step 7: Raise a Grievance

If refund is delayed beyond 60 days after processing:

  1. E-filing portal grievance: Login โ†’ Services โ†’ Grievance โ†’ New Grievance โ†’ Select "Refund"
  2. CPC helpline: 1800-103-0025 (toll-free) or 080-4612-2000
  3. E-Nivaran: incometax.gov.in โ†’ Grievance โ†’ e-Nivaran
  4. CPGRAMS: pgportal.gov.in โ†’ Ministry of Finance โ†’ CBDT
  5. IT Ombudsman: If unresolved for 30+ days โ€” file with Income Tax Ombudsman in your jurisdiction

Refund Interest: You're Entitled to It

Under Section 244A, if the IT department delays your refund:

  • You get 6% annual interest (0.5% per month)
  • Calculated from April 1 of assessment year to date of refund
  • Interest is taxable as income from other sources

Quick Summary

Issue Fix
Not yet processed Wait 45 days from e-verification, then raise grievance
Refund failed Pre-validate bank account โ†’ request reissue
Adjusted against demand Check demand, dispute if incorrect
Not e-verified E-verify via Aadhaar OTP immediately
TDS mismatch Check 26AS/AIS, file revised return if needed
Delayed 60+ days Raise grievance + call CPC helpline

Your money is legally yours โ€” don't let bureaucratic delays keep it. Use the grievance mechanism aggressively if your refund is genuinely overdue.
