FAQs

Q1: Who is eligible for the ₹2.5 lakh inter-caste marriage scheme?

Couples where one spouse is from a Scheduled Caste (SC) and the other is from a non-SC category (General, OBC, etc.). Combined annual income must be ≤ ₹5 lakh, and it must be the first marriage for both.

Q2: Can I get both central and state inter-caste marriage benefits?

Yes, in most states you can claim both the Dr. Ambedkar central scheme (₹2.5 lakh) and the state scheme simultaneously. The total amount varies by state.

Q3: Is the ₹2.5 lakh given as cash or fixed deposit?

₹1 lakh is given immediately, and ₹1.5 lakh is placed in a 3-year fixed deposit in the couple's joint name. The FD amount can be withdrawn after 3 years.

Q4: What if one spouse is from OBC and the other from General category?

The central Dr. Ambedkar scheme specifically requires one spouse to be from SC category. OBC-General marriages are not covered under this central scheme, but some state schemes may cover them.

Q5: Can I apply if my marriage was a court marriage?

Yes. Both marriages under the Hindu Marriage Act and the Special Marriage Act (court marriage) are eligible. You need a valid marriage certificate. See our court marriage process guide.

Q6: What if I applied but my application was rejected?

Common reasons for rejection: incomplete documents, income exceeding ₹5 lakh, application after 1 year, or invalid caste certificate. You can reapply after addressing the deficiency. Contact your District Social Welfare Office for clarification.

Q7: Is the scheme available for SC-ST marriages?

The central scheme covers marriages between SC and non-SC categories. Some states have separate schemes for SC-ST marriages. Check with your state Social Welfare Department.
