ITR Refund Not Received? Track & Fix Delayed Refund

Filed your Income Tax Return and waiting for your refund? The Income Tax Department typically processes refunds within 30 to 120 days after e-verification. But delays happen โ€” wrong bank details, outstanding demand notices, or processing backlogs can hold up your refund.

This guide helps you track your refund status, understand why it may be delayed, and fix common issues.

How to Check ITR Refund Status

Method 1: On the Income Tax e-Filing Portal

  1. Log in to incometax.gov.in with your PAN and password
  2. Go to e-File โ†’ Income Tax Returns โ†’ View Filed Returns
  3. Check the status of your return for the relevant Assessment Year
  4. Look for the refund status โ€” it will show one of:
    • Refund Issued โ€” refund has been sent to your bank
    • Refund Determined โ€” refund amount calculated, awaiting processing
    • No Demand No Refund โ€” no refund applicable
    • Refund Failed โ€” bank account issue

Method 2: On NSDL/TIN Website

  1. Visit tin.tin.nsdl.com/oltas/refundstatuslogin.html
  2. Enter your PAN and select the Assessment Year
  3. Enter the captcha and click Submit
  4. The page will show your refund status, amount, and mode of payment

Method 3: Through ITR Processing Status (CPC)

  1. Log in to the e-Filing portal
  2. Go to Services โ†’ Intimation / Orders
  3. Check the 143(1) Intimation โ€” this shows the final tax computation by CPC
  4. If a refund is determined, it will show the amount

Why Is Your ITR Refund Delayed?

Reason What to Do
ITR not e-verified e-Verify your return immediately
Wrong bank account details Update bank account and request refund reissue
Bank account not pre-validated Pre-validate your bank account on the portal
Outstanding demand notice Respond to the demand notice online
ITR under processing Wait โ€” CPC processes returns in batches
Mismatch in income/TDS File a rectification request under Section 154
Defective return notice (139(9)) Respond within 15 days with corrected return

How to Pre-Validate Your Bank Account

Refunds are only credited to pre-validated bank accounts. If your bank account is not validated, the refund will fail.

  1. Log in to incometax.gov.in
  2. Go to Profile โ†’ My Bank Account
  3. Click Add Bank Account
  4. Enter your bank name, account number, IFSC code, and account type
  5. Click Pre-Validate
  6. Validation happens via EVC (Electronic Verification Code) sent to your bank-registered mobile number
  7. Once validated, the account will show as Validated with a green tick
  8. Nominate this account for refund by clicking Nominate for Refund

Important: The PAN linked to your bank account must match your filing PAN. If you have changed banks, update and pre-validate the new account before the refund is processed.

How to Request Refund Reissue

If your refund failed due to incorrect bank details:

  1. Log in to the e-Filing portal
  2. Go to Services โ†’ Refund Reissue
  3. Select the Assessment Year for which refund failed
  4. Select your pre-validated bank account for the refund
  5. Submit the request
  6. The refund will be reprocessed and sent to the updated bank account within 2 to 4 weeks

How to Handle Demand Notices

Sometimes, instead of a refund, you receive a demand notice under Section 245 (adjustment of refund against outstanding demand).

  1. Log in to the portal โ†’ Pending Actions โ†’ Response to Outstanding Demand
  2. Review the demand โ€” check if it is valid
  3. If the demand is incorrect, select Disagree and provide reasons
  4. If the demand is correct, pay the outstanding amount online
  5. If the demand is from a previous year and already resolved, submit proof of payment
  6. Once the demand is resolved, your refund will be released

ITR Refund Timeline

Stage Expected Time
ITR filed and e-verified Day 0
CPC processes the return 15โ€“45 days
Refund determined (143(1) intimation) 30โ€“60 days
Refund credited to bank 30โ€“120 days
Refund reissue (if failed) Additional 2โ€“4 weeks

Note: Refunds filed early in the season (July-August) are usually processed faster. Returns filed close to the deadline or revised returns may take longer.

Refund Interest

If the Income Tax Department delays your refund beyond the due date, you are entitled to interest under Section 244A at 6% per annum (simple interest). This is automatically calculated and added to your refund โ€” you do not need to apply separately.

Important Tips

  1. e-Verify your ITR immediately after filing โ€” unverified returns are not processed
  2. Pre-validate your bank account before filing to avoid refund failures
  3. Check Form 26AS to ensure TDS credits match your return โ€” mismatches cause delays
  4. Respond to notices promptly โ€” ignoring demand notices will hold up your refund
  5. File early in the season for faster processing

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: How long does it take to receive an ITR refund?

Typically 30 to 120 days after e-verification. Returns filed early and without errors are processed faster. Complex cases or revised returns may take longer.

Q2: How do I know if my refund has been credited?

You will receive an SMS and email from the IT Department. You can also check on the e-Filing portal under View Filed Returns or on the NSDL website.

Q3: My refund status shows "Refund Failed." What should I do?

This means the refund could not be credited to your bank account. Pre-validate your bank account on the portal and submit a Refund Reissue request under Services.

Q4: Can I get a refund if I have an outstanding tax demand?

The IT Department may adjust your refund against the outstanding demand under Section 245. You will receive a notice before adjustment. If the demand is incorrect, you can dispute it online.

Q5: What if my refund amount is less than expected?

Check the 143(1) Intimation for the detailed computation. The CPC may have disallowed certain deductions or adjusted TDS. If you disagree, file a rectification request under Section 154.

Q6: Is there a minimum refund amount?

No minimum amount โ€” even small refunds are processed and credited. However, refunds below โ‚น100 may be adjusted in the next year.
