Port Number to Jio: MNP Process & Step-by-Step Guide

Want to switch to Jio but keep your existing mobile number? Mobile Number Portability (MNP) lets you move your number from any operator (Airtel, Vi, BSNL, etc.) to Jio without changing your phone number. This guide covers the complete process, documents, timeline, and eSIM option.

What Is Mobile Number Portability (MNP)?

MNP is a TRAI-regulated facility that allows you to switch your telecom operator while retaining your mobile number. You can port from any operator to Jio โ€” your contacts, bank OTPs, and all services linked to your number continue working.

Key Rules (TRAI):

  • Your current number must be at least 90 days old with the existing operator
  • No outstanding dues or pending requests on your current number
  • Porting is free of cost โ€” Jio does not charge for MNP
  • You can port again after 90 days from the last port

Step-by-Step: How to Port Your Number to Jio

Step 1: Generate UPC (Unique Porting Code)

Send an SMS from the number you want to port:

SMS Format: PORT <space> <Your 10-digit Mobile Number> โ†’ Send to 1900

Example: PORT 9876543210 โ†’ Send to 1900

You will receive a UPC (Unique Porting Code) via SMS within a few minutes. This code is valid for 4 days โ€” you must visit a Jio Store within this period.

Step 2: Visit a Jio Store with Documents

Go to the nearest Jio Store or authorized retailer with:

Document Details
UPC Code Received via SMS (show the message)
Aadhaar Card For eKYC verification (original required)
Passport-size Photo 1 photo for the application form
Current SIM Must be in your phone and active

At the store:

  1. Tell them you want to port your number to Jio
  2. Complete Aadhaar eKYC (biometric verification)
  3. Fill and sign the MNP application form
  4. You'll receive a new Jio SIM card โ€” do NOT insert it yet

Step 3: Wait for Port Confirmation

  • Jio will process your MNP request
  • You'll receive an SMS on your old SIM confirming the port date (usually 4-7 working days from submission)
  • Your old SIM will continue working until the port date
  • On the port date, your old SIM will stop working (usually between 10 PM - 6 AM)

Step 4: Insert the New Jio SIM

Once your old SIM stops working:

  1. Remove your old SIM and insert the new Jio SIM
  2. Restart your phone
  3. Wait for the Jio network to appear (may take 30 minutes to 2 hours)
  4. Make a test call to verify
  5. Download MyJio app and recharge with a plan

Your number is now on Jio! All incoming calls, SMS, and OTPs will work on the new Jio SIM.

MNP Porting Timeline

Stage Duration
UPC generation Instant (SMS within minutes)
UPC validity 4 days from generation
Jio store visit + form submission Same day
Porting processing by TRAI/operators 4-7 working days
Old SIM disconnection Port date (usually night hours)
New Jio SIM activation 30 minutes to 2 hours after old SIM stops

Total: Approximately 5-7 working days from SMS to activation.

Port to Jio eSIM

If your phone supports eSIM, you can port directly to a Jio eSIM:

  1. Generate UPC as usual (SMS PORT to 1900)
  2. Visit a Jio Store and request eSIM porting
  3. Complete eKYC and MNP form
  4. Instead of a physical SIM, you'll get a QR code
  5. On the port date, scan the QR code from Settings โ†’ Mobile Data โ†’ Add eSIM
  6. Jio eSIM will activate within 2-4 hours

Advantage: You can keep your current physical SIM in one slot and use Jio eSIM โ€” perfect for dual SIM usage.

Common MNP Porting Issues

Port Request Rejected

Common reasons for rejection:

  • Number is less than 90 days old with current operator
  • Outstanding dues on your current number
  • UPC expired (older than 4 days)
  • Incorrect details on the MNP form
  • Active contract or lock-in with current operator

Fix: Clear dues, wait for 90-day eligibility, and generate a new UPC.

Old SIM Stopped but Jio SIM Not Working

  1. Ensure Jio SIM is properly inserted
  2. Set network to 4G/LTE mode
  3. Enable VoLTE
  4. Toggle Airplane Mode on/off
  5. Restart phone
  6. If not working after 2 hours, call 1800-889-9999 from another phone

Calls/SMS Working but Data Not Working

Set APN to jionet โ€” see our Jio network fix guide for detailed APN settings.

Important Tips

  1. Don't discard your old SIM until the Jio SIM is fully activated and working
  2. Generate UPC only when ready โ€” the 4-day validity is strict
  3. Clear all dues with your current operator before initiating port to avoid rejection
  4. Inform your bank if you face OTP issues after porting โ€” some banks take 24-48 hours to update
  5. Port during weekdays for faster processing โ€” weekend/holiday submissions may take longer

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1: Is porting to Jio free?

Yes. Jio does not charge any fee for MNP. However, you'll need to recharge with a Jio plan after activation.

Q2: Can I port a prepaid number to Jio postpaid (or vice versa)?

Yes. You can port from any operator's prepaid/postpaid to Jio prepaid or postpaid. Mention your preference at the Jio Store.

Q3: Will I lose my WhatsApp, bank OTPs, and other services during porting?

During the brief switch-over period (usually a few hours at night), you won't receive calls/SMS. After the Jio SIM activates, all services resume. WhatsApp continues working as it's tied to your number.

Q4: Can I port my number if I have an active contract with my current operator?

Some operators may reject the port request if you have an active lock-in period. Check with your current operator first or clear any contract obligations.

Q5: I sent PORT SMS but didn't receive UPC. What should I do?

Wait 15 minutes and try again. If it still doesn't work, call your current operator's customer care โ€” they may have a technical block. You can also try sending the SMS during non-peak hours.

Q6: Can I port from BSNL/MTNL to Jio?

Yes. The MNP process is the same for all operators including BSNL and MTNL. Send PORT SMS to 1900 and follow the standard process.

Q7: How many times can I port my number?

There's no limit, but you must wait 90 days between each port request as per TRAI regulations.
