Gruha Jyothi Scheme Karnataka โ Free Electricity Up to 200 Units
What is Gruha Jyothi Scheme?
Gruha Jyothi is one of Karnataka's five guarantee schemes providing free electricity up to 200 units per month to every household. Under this scheme, domestic consumers whose monthly electricity consumption does not exceed 200 units receive a zero electricity bill (excluding fixed/meter charges in some cases). The scheme covers all domestic connections across the state.
Who is Eligible?
- Domestic consumers in Karnataka with a valid electricity connection
- One connection per household (linked to ration card)
- Monthly consumption must be 200 units or less to get full benefit
- Must have a valid Karnataka ration card linked to the electricity account
- The connection must be a domestic/residential connection (not commercial or industrial)
Who is NOT Eligible?
- Households consuming more than 200 units/month will pay the full bill (no partial benefit)
- Commercial, industrial, or agricultural connections
- Households where any member is a government employee of Group A/B rank
- Households where any member is an income tax payer

How the Benefit Works
| Consumption | Benefit |
|---|---|
| 0โ200 units/month | Full bill waived (free electricity) |
| Above 200 units/month | No benefit โ pay the full bill |
โก Important: The 200-unit limit is strict. If you consume even 201 units, you pay the entire bill โ there is no partial waiver.
Processing Time
- Registration: Instant to 7 days for linkage verification
- Benefit Application: From the next billing cycle after successful registration
Important Tips
- Monitor Your Usage: Keep consumption below 200 units. Use energy-efficient appliances to stay within the limit.
- Link Ration Card Early: The scheme requires ration card-to-meter linkage. Do this as soon as possible.
- Check Your Bill: Verify that the Gruha Jyothi discount appears on your electricity bill after registration.
- One Connection Only: If you have multiple electricity connections, only one (linked to ration card) gets the benefit.
- Fixed Charges May Apply: Some ESCOMs may still charge a small fixed/meter charge even under Gruha Jyothi. Check your bill details.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q1: What happens if I use more than 200 units?
You will have to pay the full electricity bill for that month. There is no partial discount โ the 200-unit limit is an all-or-nothing threshold.
Q2: Do I need to apply every month?
No. Once registered, the benefit is automatically applied every month as long as your consumption stays within 200 units.
Q3: Can I get Gruha Jyothi if I don't have a ration card?
No. A valid Karnataka ration card is mandatory. Apply for a ration card through ahara.kar.nic.in first.
Q4: My bill still shows charges even though I use less than 200 units. Why?
Some ESCOMs charge a nominal fixed charge or meter rent. The Gruha Jyothi scheme covers the energy charges, but fixed charges may still appear.
Q5: I have two houses with two connections. Can both get the benefit?
No. Only one domestic connection per ration card is eligible.
Q6: Is this scheme available across all of Karnataka?
Yes. It covers all five ESCOMs โ BESCOM, HESCOM, MESCOM, GESCOM, and CESC.
Q7: Can tenants avail this scheme?
The benefit is linked to the ration card and electricity account. If the tenant's ration card is linked to that address and meter, they may be eligible.
