What is Labour Card (E-Shram Card)?

The E-Shram card is a national identity card for unorganized workers in India, issued by the Ministry of Labour and Employment through the eshram.gov.in portal. It provides a Universal Account Number (UAN) — a 12-digit unique number for each worker.

The E-Shram card entitles unorganized workers to:

  • ₹2 lakh accidental insurance (death) and ₹1 lakh (partial disability) under PMSBY
  • Access to government welfare schemes
  • Social security benefits tracking
  • Future portability of benefits across states

Note: The E-Shram UAN is different from the EPF UAN. E-Shram is for unorganized sector workers not covered under EPFO/ESIC.

Who is Eligible?

  • Unorganized workers aged 16-59 years
  • Workers not registered under EPFO or ESIC
  • Must have Aadhaar card with linked mobile number
  • Must have a bank account

FAQs

Q1: Is E-Shram card the same as labour card?

Broadly yes. E-Shram is the central government's national labour card for unorganized workers. State governments also issue their own labour cards with additional state-specific benefits. You can hold both.

Q2: What if I don't have a smartphone for registration?

Visit your nearest CSC (Common Service Centre). The operator will register you using biometric (fingerprint) authentication. You'll receive a printed card.

Q3: Can EPFO/ESIC members get an E-Shram card?

No. If you're currently registered under EPFO or ESIC, you're considered an organized sector worker and not eligible for E-Shram registration.

Q4: Is there any monthly premium for the insurance benefit?

No. The ₹2 lakh accidental insurance under PMSBY is fully funded by the government. There's no premium for E-Shram cardholders.

Q5: Can I use E-Shram card as ID proof?

The E-Shram card is not officially listed as identity proof for most government services. It's primarily a welfare registration card. Use Aadhaar or PAN for ID purposes.

Q6: How do I check my E-Shram registration status?

Visit eshram.gov.in, click "Already Registered", enter your Aadhaar or UAN, verify via OTP, and view/download your card.

Q7: Can migrant workers from other states register?

Yes. E-Shram is a national portal. Workers can register regardless of their home state. The card is valid across India, enabling portability of benefits.
