What is Udyam Registration?
Udyam Registration is the official process for registering Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in India. Launched on 1st July 2020, it replaced the earlier Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) system. The registration is completely free, paperless, and done on self-declaration basis through the Udyam portal.
Every business that qualifies as an MSME should register on the Udyam portal to access numerous government benefits, subsidies, and priority sector lending advantages.
MSME Classification
MSMEs are classified based on investment in plant and machinery AND annual turnover:
Manufacturing and Services (Unified)
| Category | Investment | Turnover |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | Up to โน1 crore | Up to โน5 crore |
| Small | Up to โน10 crore | Up to โน50 crore |
| Medium | Up to โน50 crore | Up to โน250 crore |
Both criteria must be satisfied. The higher of the two classification criteria determines the category.
Note: Export turnover is excluded from the turnover calculation, encouraging export-oriented MSMEs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Udyam registration mandatory?
It's not legally mandatory to operate a business, but it's required to avail any MSME benefits, subsidies, priority lending, and government procurement preferences. It's highly recommended.
Can service businesses register as MSME?
Yes, both manufacturing and service enterprises can register. The classification criteria (investment and turnover) are the same for both since the 2020 revision.
What is the validity of Udyam registration?
Udyam registration has no expiry date. It remains valid as long as the enterprise exists. However, the MSME classification may change based on updated investment/turnover data pulled from ITR and GST returns.
Can I have multiple Udyam registrations?
No, an enterprise can have only one Udyam registration. If you operate multiple business activities, they should all be listed under one registration. However, different entities (separate PAN) can have separate registrations.
My UAM is expiring โ what should I do?
All existing UAM registrations should be migrated to Udyam. Visit the portal, select "For those already having registration as MSME," and re-register. Your UAM data will be migrated.
Does Udyam registration help in getting bank loans?
Yes, banks are mandated to provide priority sector lending to registered MSMEs. Having a Udyam certificate makes loan applications stronger and may get you lower interest rates and collateral-free loans under CGTMSE.
