NACH Mandate โ€” How to View, Cancel & Manage All Auto-Debits

You signed up for an EMI, insurance, SIP, or OTT subscription months ago. Money keeps getting debited. But how do you stop it? And do you even know all the mandates you've authorized?

NACH (National Automated Clearing House) is the system behind most auto-debits in India โ€” managed by NPCI. This guide shows you how to see every active mandate and cancel the ones you don't want.

What Is a NACH Mandate?

A NACH mandate is an instruction you give to your bank that authorizes a third party to debit a fixed or variable amount from your account on a scheduled basis.

You authorize a NACH mandate when you:

  • Take a loan (EMI auto-debit)
  • Start a mutual fund SIP
  • Set up insurance premium auto-pay
  • Subscribe to a service (gym, club, subscription box)
  • Activate UPI AutoPay for OTT (Netflix, Hotstar, Swiggy, etc.)

The problem: People sign many mandates over years and forget about them โ€” and money keeps leaving.

NACH vs UPI AutoPay vs ECS โ€” What's Different?

Feature NACH UPI AutoPay Old ECS

UPI AutoPay (Recurring Payments) is separate from NACH โ€” see the section below for cancelling UPI AutoPay.

Step 2: How to Cancel a NACH Mandate

This is the most reliable method โ€” even if the biller company ignores your cancellation request:

SBI:

  1. Net Banking โ†’ NACH Management โ†’ Select mandate to cancel
  2. Revoke/Cancel Mandate โ†’ Confirm
  3. Bank sends cancellation to NPCI within 1โ€“2 working days

HDFC:

  1. Net Banking โ†’ Payments โ†’ NACH Mandates โ†’ Select โ†’ Revoke

ICICI:

  1. iMobile โ†’ Service Requests โ†’ NACH Mandate โ†’ Cancel selected mandate

Physical option (all banks): Visit your home branch, fill NACH cancellation form, submit with account number and mandate reference number. Bank processes within 3โ€“5 working days.

Method 2: Contact the Biller (Originator)

  • Contact the company (loan provider, insurer, AMC, OTT platform) directly
  • Request NACH mandate cancellation
  • They must submit cancellation to NPCI
  • Risk: Companies sometimes ignore or delay this โ€” always follow up with your bank as backup

Method 3: Email / Letter to Bank

Write to your bank's registered email:

  • Subject: NACH Mandate Cancellation Request
  • Include: Account number, mandate reference number, company name, amount, reason
  • Bank processes within 5โ€“7 working days

Cancelling UPI AutoPay (Different from NACH)

UPI AutoPay (for Netflix, Hotstar, Swiggy, Zomato Gold, etc.) is separate:

BHIM:

  1. BHIM app โ†’ Recurring โ†’ Select โ†’ Cancel

What to Do If Money Was Debited After Cancellation

If debit happened despite cancellation:

  1. Raise a dispute at your bank โ€” NPCI mandates resolution within 7 working days
  2. Contact the biller โ€” Show proof of cancellation and demand refund
  3. File NPCI complaint: npci.org.in โ†’ Consumer Complaint (for NACH issues)
  4. Escalate: If unresolved in 15 days โ€” file on RBI's Complaint Management System (CMS) at cms.rbi.org.in
  5. Chargebacks: For credit card auto-debits, raise a chargeback through your credit card issuer

Important Rules Banks Must Follow (Per RBI)

Under RBI circulars, banks must:

  • Send you notification 24 hours before every NACH/ECS debit (SMS/email)
  • Allow you to cancel mandates via net banking or mobile app without visiting branch
  • Implement mandates within 2 working days of activation
  • Process cancellations within 2 working days

If your bank is not sending pre-debit notifications, report them on cms.rbi.org.in.

How to Block All Future NACH Debits Temporarily

If you're between jobs or need to stop all auto-debits temporarily:

  1. Maintain low balance in the account (auto-debits fail if insufficient funds โ€” though the bank may charge a return/bounce fee)
  2. Ask bank to put "stop payment" on specific amounts โ€” but this is amount-specific, not mandate-specific
  3. The proper way: Cancel individual mandates one by one

Caution: Letting loan EMIs fail due to insufficient funds will: (a) attract bounce charges โ‚น500โ€“โ‚น1,500 per bounce, (b) hurt your CIBIL score, (c) create loan default risk. Never intentionally let loan EMI mandates fail โ€” contact the lender to restructure instead.

Annual NACH Mandate Audit โ€” Do This Every April

At the start of each financial year:

  1. Log into your bank's NACH management section
  2. List all active mandates
  3. Cross-check against services you still use
  4. Cancel anything you no longer need
  5. Check amounts โ€” ensure no mandate amounts have changed without your consent

This takes 15 minutes and can save thousands annually.

Frequently Asked Questions

I cancelled a NACH mandate but money still got debited โ€” what do I do? Raise an ECS/NACH dispute at your bank branch or via the bank's customer care. Under NPCI rules, if debit happened after valid cancellation, you are entitled to a refund. Also report to the biller. Escalate to RBI CMS if not resolved in 15 days.

How many NACH mandates can a single bank account have? There is no fixed limit โ€” you can have as many mandates as you've authorized. That's why auditing them is important. People accumulate 10โ€“15 mandates over years.

Can a company activate NACH without my signature? No โ€” NACH mandate requires your explicit authorization (physical signature on mandate form, or digital authentication via net banking/Aadhaar OTP/debit card). If money is being debited without your authorization, report immediately as fraudulent.

I lost my job โ€” how do I pause my SIP NACH mandate without penalty? Contact your AMC (HDFC Mutual Fund, SBI MF, etc.) directly. Most AMFs allow SIP pause for 1โ€“3 months. Alternatively, cancel the SIP mandate via the AMC's website/app โ€” you can restart later. No penalty for stopping SIP, but any partial units already purchased remain with you.

What is the difference between NACH and NEFT standing instruction? NACH is for recurring auto-debits WHERE THE COMPANY INITIATES the debit. NEFT standing instruction is WHERE YOU INITIATE recurring payments from your side (like paying rent). The key difference: NACH = others pull from your account; NEFT SI = you push money out.
