It is held twice a year in over 80 subjects across arts, humanities, social sciences, and sciences.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between NET and JRF?

Both are awarded through the same exam. NET qualifies you for Assistant Professor positions. JRF additionally provides a research fellowship for PhD. JRF is given to top-ranking candidates.

Can I apply for NET in a subject different from my Master's degree?

Generally, you should apply for the subject matching your postgraduate degree. However, NTA allows some flexibility — check the subject-wise eligibility on the official website.

How many times can I attempt UGC NET?

There is no limit on attempts for NET (Assistant Professor eligibility). For JRF, you must be within the age limit (30 years, with relaxation for reserved categories).

Is UGC NET valid for life?

NET qualification for Assistant Professor is valid for life. JRF validity is 3 years from the date of the award letter to join a research program.

Can I do PhD without NET/JRF?

Yes, you can pursue PhD through university entrance exams. However, without JRF, you won't receive the UGC fellowship. Some universities accept NET score for PhD admission.

What is SET/SLET? Is it equivalent to NET?

State Eligibility Test (SET) qualifies you for Assistant Professor positions within that state only. NET is valid nationally. SET is not equivalent to NET for JRF.
