What is NREGA / MGNREGA?
NREGA stands for National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. It is also called MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act). This is a law made by the Government of India in 2005.
Under this scheme:
- Every rural household gets 100 days of guaranteed wage employment per year
- The work is unskilled manual work — like digging wells, building roads, planting trees
- If the government cannot give you work within 15 days of applying, you get unemployment allowance
- Payment is sent directly to your bank account or post office account
MGNREGA is the largest employment programme in the world. It helps crores of families in villages across India.
