PAN Card Not Received by Post? Track & Fix Delivery

Applied for a PAN card weeks ago and still haven't received it? You're not alone. PAN cards are dispatched via India Post (speed post) or courier, and delays happen due to address issues, postal backlogs, or dispatch errors. This guide covers how to track your PAN card delivery, fix common issues, and get your PAN quickly through alternatives like e-PAN download.

How PAN Cards Are Dispatched

After your PAN application is processed by NSDL (now Protean) or UTIITSL, the physical PAN card is printed and dispatched via:

  • India Post Speed Post — most common method
  • Private courier — in some cases

Typical delivery timeline: 15–20 working days from the date of application for domestic addresses. For NRI applicants, it may take 4–6 weeks.

Step 1: Track Your PAN Card Dispatch Status on NSDL

Before assuming your PAN is lost, check whether it has been dispatched:

  1. Visit the NSDL PAN status tracking page: tin.tin.nsdl.com/pantan/StatusTrack.html
  2. Enter your 15-digit acknowledgement number (received when you applied)
  3. Click Submit
  4. The status will show one of:
    • PAN Under Process — your application is still being reviewed
    • PAN Card Dispatched — card has been sent; a speed post tracking number will be shown
    • PAN Card Returned — delivery failed and the card was returned to NSDL

Tip: Note the speed post consignment number (starts with E) shown in the dispatch status. You'll need it for postal tracking.

Step 2: Track Speed Post Delivery via India Post

If your PAN status shows "Dispatched," track the speed post:

  1. Visit India Post Tracking
  2. Enter the speed post consignment number from the NSDL status page
  3. Click Search
  4. You'll see the delivery journey — from booking to out-for-delivery to delivered

Common Speed Post Statuses

Status Meaning
Booked Dispatched from NSDL centre
In Transit Moving through postal network
Out for Delivery With your local postman
Delivered Successfully delivered
Returned to Sender Delivery attempt failed

Step 3: Fix Address Mismatch Issues

The most common reason for non-delivery is an incorrect or incomplete address in your PAN application. If your PAN card was returned:

What to Do

  1. Verify your address — Log in to NSDL PAN portal and check the address you provided
  2. Apply for PAN correction — If the address is wrong, submit a Change/Correction in PAN Data request:
    • Go to NSDL PAN portal
    • Select Changes or Correction in existing PAN Data
    • Update your address with correct PIN code
    • Upload address proof and pay ₹107 (₹1,017 for foreign address)
  3. Ensure PIN code is correct — Many returns happen due to wrong PIN code

Important: If your locality name or flat number is missing, the postman may not find your address. Always include complete details with landmark.

Step 4: Order a PAN Card Reprint

If your PAN was dispatched but never received (lost in transit), you can order a reprint without applying fresh:

Online Reprint via NSDL

  1. Visit NSDL PAN Reprint
  2. Select Reprint of PAN Card
  3. Enter your PAN number
  4. Verify via OTP on your registered mobile/email
  5. Verify your details — update address if needed
  6. Pay ₹50 + GST (domestic) or ₹959 + GST (foreign dispatch)
  7. A new PAN card will be printed and dispatched

Online Reprint via UTIITSL

  1. Visit UTIITSL PAN portal
  2. Select Reprint PAN Card
  3. Follow similar OTP verification and payment process

Note: Reprint only sends a new physical card. Your PAN number and details remain the same.

Step 5: Download e-PAN as an Instant Alternative

Don't want to wait for the physical card? Download your e-PAN (digital PAN card with QR code) instantly:

From Income Tax e-Filing Portal

  1. Visit incometax.gov.in
  2. Click Instant e-PAN on the homepage
  3. Select Check Status / Download e-PAN
  4. Enter your Aadhaar number
  5. Verify via OTP on Aadhaar-linked mobile
  6. Download the e-PAN PDF (password: your date of birth in DDMMYYYY format)

From NSDL

  1. Visit NSDL e-PAN Download
  2. Select Download e-PAN
  3. Enter PAN number or acknowledgement number
  4. Verify via OTP and download

e-PAN is legally valid — it is accepted everywhere the physical PAN card is accepted, including banks and ITR filing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to receive a PAN card by post?

Typically 15–20 working days from the date of application for Indian addresses. If dispatched, speed post delivery usually takes 4–7 days from the dispatch date.

What if my PAN card status shows "Dispatched" but I haven't received it?

Track the speed post using the consignment number on the India Post website. If it shows "Returned to Sender," your address may be incorrect. Apply for a reprint with the correct address.

Can I get my PAN card delivered to a different address?

Yes. Apply for a PAN correction/reprint and update your communication address. The new card will be sent to the updated address.

Is e-PAN valid for opening a bank account?

Yes. The e-PAN with QR code is legally equivalent to the physical PAN card and is accepted by all banks and financial institutions.

What should I do if I have an urgent need for PAN but haven't received the card?

Download the e-PAN from the Income Tax portal immediately. It is available within minutes of PAN allotment and is accepted everywhere.

Can I track my PAN card without the acknowledgement number?

You can check PAN status using your PAN number on the NSDL website if PAN has already been allotted. For dispatch tracking, you need the acknowledgement number.

My PAN card was delivered to the wrong person. What do I do?

File a complaint at your local post office with the speed post tracking number. Simultaneously, order a reprint from the NSDL/UTIITSL portal.
