PhonePe Money Debited But Not Received? How to Get Your Refund
One of the most stressful UPI issues is when money gets debited from your account but the receiver doesn't get it. This usually happens due to a network timeout between your bank and the receiver's bank. The good news: in most cases, the money is automatically reversed. Here's everything you need to know.
Why Does This Happen?
When you make a UPI payment via PhonePe, the transaction passes through multiple stages:
- Your bank debits the money from your account.
- The money is routed through NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India).
- The receiver's bank credits the money.
If the process fails at step 2 or 3 (due to server timeout, network issue, or receiver's bank being down), your money is debited but not credited to the receiver. The transaction is marked as "Pending" or shows as "Failed" on the receiver's end.
Step 1: Check Transaction Status
Before taking any action, check the actual status:
- Open PhonePe > tap Transaction History (clock icon).
- Find the transaction and tap on it.
- Check the status:
- Success â Money was credited. Ask the receiver to check their bank statement (not just UPI app).
- Pending â Transaction is still being processed. Wait.
- Failed â Transaction failed. Refund will be processed.
Important: Sometimes the receiver's UPI app shows a delay, but the money has actually been credited to their bank account. Ask them to check their bank passbook or net banking, not just the UPI app notification.
Step 2: Wait for Auto-Reversal (Up to 48 Hours)
If the transaction status shows Pending or Failed:
- NPCI and banks have an automatic reversal process.
- Money is typically reversed within 24â48 hours (3â5 business days in some cases).
- The refund goes directly to your bank account â check your bank statement, not PhonePe balance.
- You'll receive an SMS from your bank when the reversal is completed.
Do not initiate a new payment for the same purpose until the pending transaction is resolved.
Step 3: Raise a Dispute on PhonePe
If the money is not reversed within 48 hours:
- Open PhonePe > tap Help (?) icon.
- Select the affected transaction from the list.
- Tap "Transaction successful but money not received by beneficiary" or similar option.
- PhonePe will auto-check the transaction status with NPCI.
- If unresolved, you'll get the option to "Raise a Dispute."
- Fill in the required details and submit.
- PhonePe will escalate to NPCI and your bank.
Resolution timeline: PhonePe/NPCI aims to resolve disputes within 7â15 working days.
Step 4: NPCI Escalation
If PhonePe doesn't resolve the dispute within 15 days, escalate directly to NPCI:
- Note your UPI Transaction Reference ID (12-digit number starting with your bank code) from the transaction details.
- Contact NPCI via:
- Email: npci@npci.org.in
- Online: Visit NPCI website
- Include in your complaint:
- Your name and mobile number
- UPI Transaction Reference ID
- Date and amount of the transaction
- Bank name (sender and receiver)
- Screenshot of the transaction
- NPCI coordinates between both banks to trace and resolve the transaction.
Step 5: Bank Complaint
If NPCI escalation doesn't resolve the issue within 30 days, file a complaint with your bank:
- Call your bank's customer care and register a complaint about the failed UPI transaction.
- Visit your bank branch with:
- UPI Transaction Reference ID
- Bank account statement showing the debit
- Screenshot from PhonePe
- Ask the bank to initiate a chargeback with the receiver's bank.
- Get a complaint reference number for tracking.
Step 6: RBI Banking Ombudsman (Last Resort)
If the bank doesn't resolve it within 30 days:
- File a complaint with the RBI Banking Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in.
- Select "Complaint against Bank" > "Internet Banking / Mobile Banking / UPI."
- Upload all supporting documents.
- The Ombudsman will investigate and can order the bank to refund your money.

Important Tips
- Always note the UPI Transaction Reference ID for every high-value transaction.
- Take screenshots of failed/pending transactions immediately.
- Don't retry the same payment while a transaction is still pending.
- Check your bank statement (not just PhonePe app) for the refund â sometimes the reversal happens but the app doesn't update immediately.
- Keep all complaint reference numbers for escalation purposes.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does PhonePe take to refund debited money?
Most auto-reversals happen within 24â48 hours. In some cases, it may take up to 5 business days. If not refunded by then, raise a dispute in the PhonePe app.
Where will I receive the refund â PhonePe wallet or bank account?
The refund goes directly to your bank account (the one from which money was debited), not to PhonePe wallet.
The transaction shows "Success" but receiver says they didn't get the money. What to do?
Ask the receiver to check their bank account statement (via net banking or bank app), not just the UPI notification. If the bank statement also doesn't show the credit, raise a dispute on PhonePe.
Can I get a refund for a payment made to the wrong person?
UPI payments to wrong beneficiaries cannot be auto-reversed. You must request the receiver to return the money. If they refuse, file a complaint with PhonePe and your bank, and escalate to the police cyber cell if needed.
What is the UPI Transaction Reference ID?
It's a unique 12-digit number assigned to every UPI transaction. You can find it in PhonePe transaction details. It's essential for filing complaints and tracking with NPCI/banks.
Does PhonePe charge for raising a dispute?
No. Raising a dispute or complaint on PhonePe is completely free.
