What is SBI Account Closure?

SBI account closure is the process of permanently closing your State Bank of India savings or current account. Once closed, all services linked to the account (debit card, UPI, net banking, auto-debits) will be terminated. You must withdraw or transfer the remaining balance before closure.

Who Can Close an SBI Account?

  • Individual account holders (single or joint)
  • For joint accounts, all account holders must sign the closure form
  • Minor accounts require the guardian to initiate closure
  • NRI accounts can be closed by visiting the branch or through an authorized representative

Documents Required

  • Account closure form (available at SBI branch)
  • Original passbook (if issued)
  • Unused cheque leaves and chequebook (must be surrendered)
  • Debit card / ATM card (must be surrendered)
  • Photo ID proof: Aadhaar card, PAN card, or Passport
  • Closing balance demand draft request (if transferring to another bank)

Step-by-Step Process to Close SBI Account

Step 1: Visit Your SBI Home Branch

Account closure must be done at the home branch (the branch where your account was opened). You cannot close the account at any other branch or online.

Note: As of now, SBI does not offer complete online account closure. You must visit the branch.

Step 2: Obtain Account Closure Form

  2. The form is also known as SBI Account Closure Request Form
  3. Fill in the following details:
    • Account number
    • Account holder name(s)
    • Reason for closure (optional)
    • Mode of balance settlement (cash / transfer / DD)

Step 3: Surrender Debit Card and Chequebook

  • Return your debit card (cut it in half before submitting)
  • Surrender all unused cheque leaves
  • If you've lost the debit card or chequebook, mention this in the form

Closing a Dormant / Inactive SBI Account

If your SBI account has been inactive for 2+ years, it becomes dormant. To close a dormant account:

  1. Visit your home branch with ID proof
  2. Submit a reactivation request along with the closure form
  3. The branch may reactivate the account first and then process closure
  4. Complete KYC re-verification if required
  5. No additional charges for dormant account closure

Tip: If you just want to reactivate (not close), do one transaction (deposit ₹500-1000) to make the account active again.

Things to Do Before Closing SBI Account

  1. Stop all auto-debits: Cancel SBI auto-pay mandates for EMIs, insurance, SIP, and subscriptions

  3. Transfer balance to another account
  4. Delink UPI: Remove SBI account from Google Pay, PhonePe, BHIM
  5. Download statements: Get your account statements for record-keeping via net banking before closure
  6. Close linked FDs/RDs: Close or transfer any fixed deposits or recurring deposits linked to the account

Important Tips

  1. Visit your home branch only — closure is not possible at other SBI branches
  2. Carry original ID proof — Aadhaar or PAN is mandatory
  3. Close within 14 days if you opened by mistake — no charges apply
  4. Keep the acknowledgement receipt until you receive closure confirmation SMS
  5. Check for pending transactions — ensure no cheques are in clearing before closing
