PNR Status Check: Track Railway Ticket Live Status
Every Indian Railways ticket has a unique 10-digit PNR (Passenger Name Record) number. You can use this PNR to check the live booking status of your ticket — whether it is confirmed (CNF), waitlisted (WL), or RAC. This guide covers all official methods to check your PNR status.
What is a PNR Number?
PNR stands for Passenger Name Record. It is a 10-digit number printed on the top-left corner of your railway ticket (both e-ticket and counter ticket). The PNR stores all details of your booking — passenger names, train number, date of journey, class, and current booking status.
Where to find your PNR:
- E-ticket: In the booking confirmation email/SMS from IRCTC, or on the ticket PDF
- Counter ticket: Printed on the top-left of the physical ticket
How to Check PNR Status Online
Method 1: Indian Railways Official Website
- Go to indianrail.gov.in PNR Enquiry
- Enter your 10-digit PNR number
- Enter the captcha code
- Click Get Status
- Your current booking status will be displayed
Method 2: IRCTC Website or App
- Log in to irctc.co.in
- Go to PNR Status section (or My Transactions > Booked Ticket History for e-tickets)
- Enter your PNR number
- View the live status of each passenger
Method 3: NTES (National Train Enquiry System) App
- Download the NTES app from Google Play Store or Apple App Store
- Open the app and select PNR Enquiry
- Enter the 10-digit PNR number
- Tap Get Status
Method 4: SMS (No Internet Required)
Send an SMS in this format:
PNR <10-digit PNR number> to 139
Example: PNR 2612345678 → Send to 139
You will receive an SMS reply with your current booking status. Standard SMS charges apply.
Method 5: IVRS (Phone Call)
Call 139 from any phone. Follow the voice prompts and enter your PNR number. The system will read out your current status.
Understanding PNR Status Results
| Status Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| CNF / Confirmed | Seat is confirmed. You have a reserved berth. |
| RAC (R1, R2…) | Reservation Against Cancellation. You get a shared berth. |
| WL (W/L 15) | Waitlisted. No berth allotted yet. Depends on cancellations. |
| CAN | Ticket has been cancelled. |
| GNWL | General Waitlist — for general quota. |
| RLWL | Remote Location Waitlist — boarding from intermediate station. |
| PQWL | Pooled Quota Waitlist — for short-distance travel on long-route trains. |
| REGRET/WL | Waitlist not confirmed; cannot travel. |
Tip: If your e-ticket status shows WL after chart preparation, the ticket is automatically cancelled and refund is processed to your account.
PNR Prediction: Will My Ticket Get Confirmed?
PNR prediction estimates your chances of ticket confirmation based on historical data. While no prediction is 100% accurate, these factors affect confirmation:
- Waitlist number: Lower WL numbers have higher chances
- Route and season: Popular routes during festivals have lower confirmation rates
- Quota type: GNWL confirms faster than RLWL or PQWL
- Days to departure: More days = more time for cancellations
- Train popularity: Less popular trains confirm faster
Note: There is no official government PNR prediction tool. Use only the official PNR status check for confirmed information.
Chart Preparation: When is Final Status Decided?
Indian Railways prepares the reservation chart in two stages:
- First chart: Usually prepared 4-6 hours before the train's departure from its originating station
- Second (final) chart: Prepared about 30 minutes before departure
Important points about chart preparation:
- After chart preparation, your PNR status becomes final
- If your e-ticket is still WL after chart preparation, it is automatically cancelled
- If your counter ticket is WL after chart, you cannot board the train
- RAC passengers can board the train and get a shared seat
- Sometimes additional confirmations happen between first and second chart
Important Tips
- Check status regularly as your journey date approaches — WL positions change frequently due to cancellations
- Keep your PNR handy — save the SMS or screenshot your e-ticket confirmation
- Auto-cancellation for e-tickets: WL e-tickets are auto-cancelled after chart preparation; refund is credited within 5-7 working days
- For counter tickets on WL, visit the reservation counter before chart preparation to cancel and get a refund
- Use official sources only — always check PNR status from indianrail.gov.in or IRCTC to avoid scams
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. How many times can I check my PNR status?
There is no limit on checking PNR status through the official website. You can check as many times as needed before and after chart preparation.
Q2. Can I check PNR status after the journey date?
Yes, PNR status remains available for a few days after the journey date on the official website.
Q3. What happens if my PNR shows WL after chart preparation?
For e-tickets, the ticket is automatically cancelled and the refund is processed to your payment method. For counter tickets, you should cancel at the counter; travelling on a WL ticket is not permitted.
Q4. Is PNR status available for tatkal tickets?
Yes, tatkal tickets also have a PNR number and you can check their status using the same methods.
Q5. What does "Current Status" vs "Booking Status" mean?
Booking Status shows your position at the time of booking. Current Status shows the live/latest position. Current status is what matters for travel.
Q6. Can I check someone else's PNR status?
Yes, PNR status can be checked by anyone who has the 10-digit PNR number. No login is required on indianrail.gov.in.
Q7. What is the difference between GNWL, RLWL, and PQWL?
These are different waitlist types based on your boarding and destination stations. GNWL (General) has the highest confirmation chances, while RLWL and PQWL have separate quotas with lower chances.
