Train Ticket Waitlisted Not Confirmed โ What to Do
You booked a train ticket on IRCTC and it still shows Waitlisted (WL). Will it get confirmed? What happens if it doesn't? This guide explains everything about Indian Railways waitlist tickets โ how they work, your confirmation chances, and what to do if your ticket stays unconfirmed.
How Does the Waitlist System Work?
When all confirmed berths on a train are sold out, Indian Railways starts issuing waitlisted tickets. These tickets get confirmed only when existing passengers cancel their bookings, freeing up berths.
The waitlist number (e.g., WL 15) tells you your position in the queue. As cancellations happen, your waitlist number moves closer to confirmation.
Types of Waitlist
Indian Railways uses different waitlist categories depending on your boarding and destination stations:
| Waitlist Type | Full Form | When It Applies |
|---|---|---|
| GNWL | General Waitlist | Booking covers the longest/major portion of the route |
| RLWL | Remote Location Waitlist | Boarding or destination is an intermediate station with a separate quota |
| PQWL | Pooled Quota Waitlist | Booking between two intermediate stations sharing a pooled quota |
| TQWL | Tatkal Quota Waitlist | Tatkal quota is fully booked |
| REGRET/WL | Regret Waitlist | RAC is also full; very low confirmation chances |
Key point: GNWL tickets have the highest confirmation chances. PQWL tickets have the lowest because their quota pool is small.
How to Check Your PNR Status
Check your current waitlist position using your 10-digit PNR number (found on your ticket/SMS):
Method 1: IRCTC Website
- Go to indianrail.gov.in PNR Enquiry
- Enter your 10-digit PNR number
- Click Get Status
Method 2: SMS
- Send an SMS: PNR <your 10-digit number> to 139
Method 3: IRCTC App
- Open the IRCTC Rail Connect app
- Tap PNR Status on the home screen
- Enter your PNR and check

Understanding Confirmation Chances
Several factors determine whether your waitlisted ticket will get confirmed:
High Chances of Confirmation
- GNWL with low waitlist number (WL 1โ30 for popular routes)
- Long-distance trains โ more cancellations happen over time
- Travel date is 2+ weeks away โ more time for cancellations
- Non-peak season โ festivals and holidays see fewer cancellations
Low Chances of Confirmation
- PQWL tickets โ small quota, fewer cancellations
- RLWL with high numbers โ limited remote location quota
- Travel during festivals (Diwali, Holi, Pongal, summer holidays)
- Short-distance trains โ fewer cancellations
- Ticket booked close to travel date
Waitlist Prediction Tools
Several third-party tools predict your confirmation probability based on historical data:
- ConfirmTkt โ confirmtkt.com
- RailYatri โ railyatri.in
- trainman.in โ trainman.in
These are estimates only, not guarantees. Actual confirmation depends on real-time cancellations.
What Happens at Chart Preparation?
This is the critical moment for waitlisted tickets:
- Chart preparation happens ~4 hours before departure (first chart) and ~30 minutes before (final chart)
- At chart preparation, your ticket status becomes final
- If your waitlist moved to confirmed or RAC โ you can travel
- If your ticket is still waitlisted after final chart โ it is automatically cancelled
What Is RAC?
RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) means you get a shared berth โ two passengers share one berth. RAC passengers:
- Can board the train and travel
- May get a full berth if further cancellations happen during the journey
- The TTE (Ticket Examiner) can allot a vacant berth on board
Auto-Cancellation Rules for E-Tickets
For e-tickets booked on IRCTC:
| Scenario | What Happens |
|---|---|
| Ticket still WL after final chart | Automatically cancelled, refund initiated |
| Partially confirmed (some passengers confirmed, some WL) | Confirmed passengers can travel; WL passengers auto-cancelled |
| RAC status after chart | You can travel โ not auto-cancelled |
Important: Auto-cancellation and refund apply only to e-tickets. For counter tickets (i-tickets), you must manually cancel at the railway counter before chart preparation to get a refund.
Refund on Auto-Cancelled E-Tickets
- Refund is processed automatically to your payment method
- Full fare is refunded minus a nominal clerkage charge (currently โน60 per passenger for AC classes, โน30 for Sleeper)
- Refund typically takes 5โ7 working days for net banking/cards and up to 10 days for wallets/UPI

What to Do If Your Ticket Is Still Waitlisted
Option 1: Wait for Confirmation
If your travel date is still far away and your waitlist number is reasonable, wait. Monitor your PNR status regularly.
Option 2: Book a Tatkal Ticket
- Tatkal booking opens 1 day before departure (10:00 AM for AC classes, 11:00 AM for non-AC)
- Higher fare but confirmed tickets if you book fast
- No cancellation allowed for Tatkal tickets booked online
Option 3: Try Premium Tatkal
- Dynamic pricing โ fares increase with demand
- Opens at the same time as Tatkal
- Cancellation not allowed under any circumstances
- Available only on select trains
Option 4: Check Alternate Trains
- Use Train Between Stations to find other trains on your route
- Check trains on adjacent dates if your schedule is flexible
Option 5: Try General Quota at the Counter
- Visit the railway reservation counter
- Current booking counters issue general unreserved tickets
- Some stations have Emergency Quota (EQ) or VIP quota that may release closer to departure
Option 6: Look for RAC/Confirmed on Other Classes
- If you booked Sleeper, check availability in 3AC or 2AC
- If 3AC is waitlisted, try 2AC or 1AC โ they often have availability
Option 7: Cancel and Book a Bus/Flight
If the waitlist position looks hopeless:
- Cancel the ticket before chart preparation for maximum refund
- Book an alternative mode of transport
Cancellation Charges (If You Cancel Manually Before Chart)
| Class | Cancellation Charge |
|---|---|
| AC First / Executive | โน240 |
| AC 2-Tier / AC 3-Tier | โน200 |
| AC Chair Car | โน180 |
| Sleeper Class | โน120 |
These charges apply to confirmed/RAC tickets cancelled before chart preparation. Waitlisted e-tickets cancelled before chart preparation get a full refund minus โน60 (AC) or โน30 (non-AC) clerkage.
Tips to Avoid Waitlist Issues
- Book early โ Bookings open 120 days before the journey date
- Set fare alerts on the IRCTC app for availability changes
- Try less popular trains โ Superfast/Rajdhani fill up faster than Mail/Express
- Choose off-peak dates โ Midweek travel (TueโThu) has better availability
- Book from the originating station โ GNWL quota is larger than RLWL/PQWL
- Use the IRCTC app for faster Tatkal booking โ it's quicker than the website during rush
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I board the train with a waitlisted ticket?
No. If your e-ticket is still waitlisted after chart preparation, it is automatically cancelled. Boarding with a waitlisted e-ticket can result in a fine and penalty.
What if one passenger is confirmed and another is waitlisted?
The confirmed passenger can travel. The waitlisted passenger's portion is auto-cancelled and refunded.
Does RAC mean I have a confirmed seat?
RAC is not fully confirmed โ you share a berth. But you are allowed to board and travel. You may get a full berth during the journey if cancellations occur.
How many waitlisted tickets usually get confirmed?
It depends on the train, route, and season. On popular long-distance trains, GNWL up to 50โ100 often gets confirmed. On short routes or PQWL, even WL 5 may not confirm.
Can I cancel a Tatkal ticket?
No. Online Tatkal tickets cannot be cancelled. Counter Tatkal tickets can only be cancelled under exceptional circumstances (train cancellation, late running by 3+ hours).
