How to Change Aadhaar Address Without Address Proof Documents
Change your Aadhaar card address without address proof using the Address Validation Letter or Head of Family consent process on UIDAI portal.
How to Change Aadhaar Address Without Address Proof Documents
Moved to a new city for work or studies but don't have address proof documents like utility bills, rent agreement, or property papers? UIDAI provides two official methods to change your Aadhaar card address even without traditional address proof documents:
- Address Validation Letter (AVL) ā UIDAI sends a secret code to your new address via post
- Head of Family (HoF) consent ā A family member or landlord with Aadhaar at that address verifies you
Method 1: Address Validation Letter (AVL)
This is the most popular method for tenants, students, and working professionals who don't have address proof at their new location.
How It Works
UIDAI sends a physical letter containing a Secret Code to your new address. You then enter this code online to verify and update your address.
Step-by-Step Process
- Visit myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in
- Click Login and enter your Aadhaar number
- Enter the OTP received on your Aadhaar-linked mobile number
- Go to Update Aadhaar ā Address Update
- Select Address Validation Letter option (when asked for address proof, choose "I don't have valid document")
- Enter your complete new address with correct PIN code
- Verify the address on the map using the Bhuvan portal integration
- Submit the request
- Pay the fee of ā¹50 via online payment
- A Service Request Number (SRN) will be generated ā save this
- UIDAI will send a physical letter with a Secret Code to your new address within 7ā14 days
After Receiving the Letter
- Visit myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in again
- Log in with your Aadhaar and OTP
- Go to Update Aadhaar ā Verify Address by Secret Code
- Enter your SRN and the Secret Code from the letter
- Submit ā your address will be updated within 2ā5 working days
Important: The secret code is valid for 30 days from the date of letter generation. If the letter doesn't arrive or the code expires, you can request a new letter.
Method 2: Head of Family (HoF) / Introducer Consent
If someone in your household already has Aadhaar registered at that address, they can act as your "Head of Family" to help you update your address.
Who Can Be Head of Family?
- Your landlord or property owner
- A family member already living at that address with Aadhaar
- Any Aadhaar holder whose address matches your new address
Step-by-Step Process
- Visit myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in
- Log in with your Aadhaar and OTP
- Go to Update Aadhaar ā Address Update
- Select Head of Family / Consent-based Update
- Enter the Aadhaar number of the Head of Family (the person consenting)
- Enter your new address
- Submit the request
- The Head of Family will receive an OTP/consent request on their Aadhaar-linked mobile number
- They must approve the consent
- Once approved, your address will be updated within 2ā5 working days
Note: The Head of Family's address details will NOT be shared with you. UIDAI only verifies that the address matches.
Fees
| Method | Fee |
|---|---|
| Address Validation Letter (online) | ā¹50 |
| Head of Family consent (online) | ā¹50 |
| Aadhaar Enrolment Centre (offline with documents) | ā¹50 |
What If Both Methods Fail?
If you cannot use AVL or HoF consent:
- Get a rent agreement ā Even an unregistered rent agreement on stamp paper with landlord details can work as address proof at an Aadhaar enrolment centre
- Bank statement ā Open a bank account at your new address and get a statement after 3 months
- Employer letter ā Get a letter from your employer on company letterhead mentioning your current address
- Gas connection bill ā Apply for a gas connection at your new address
