Aadhaar Biometric Lock/Unlock: How to Secure Your Data

Your Aadhaar biometric data โ€” fingerprints and iris scans โ€” is used for identity authentication across India. But when you're not actively using Aadhaar services, your biometrics don't need to be accessible. Locking them prevents unauthorized use.

UIDAI provides a free Biometric Lock/Unlock feature that lets you control when your biometrics can be used for authentication. Here's how to use it.

What is Aadhaar Biometric Lock?

When you lock your biometrics:

  • No one can authenticate using your fingerprints or iris scan
  • OTP-based and demographic authentication still works normally
  • Your Aadhaar number remains valid for all other purposes
  • You can unlock temporarily whenever you need biometric authentication

When you unlock your biometrics:

  • Biometric authentication is enabled again
  • After use, you should lock them back for security

Think of it as a safety switch โ€” keep it off when not needed.

Method 1: Lock/Unlock via myAadhaar Portal

To Lock Biometrics

  1. Visit myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in
  2. Log in with your Aadhaar number and OTP
  3. Go to My Aadhaar โ†’ Lock/Unlock Biometrics
  4. Click Lock to enable biometric lock
  5. You'll see a confirmation message โ€” your biometrics are now locked

To Unlock Biometrics (Temporary)

  1. Log in to myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in
  2. Go to Lock/Unlock Biometrics
  3. Click Unlock
  4. Your biometrics will be temporarily unlocked
  5. Important: Biometrics auto-lock again after a single successful authentication or after a set time period (usually 10 minutes if unused)

Method 2: Lock/Unlock via mAadhaar App

The mAadhaar app provides the most convenient way to manage biometric locks:

  1. Open the mAadhaar app on your phone (download guide)
  2. Tap on your Aadhaar profile
  3. Go to Biometric Lock option
  4. Toggle the lock ON to lock biometrics
  5. Toggle OFF to temporarily unlock when needed
  6. Authenticate with your registered mobile OTP or app PIN

Advantage of mAadhaar: You can quickly unlock biometrics right before a bank visit or SIM activation and lock them back immediately after.

Method 3: Using Virtual ID (VID) for Privacy

A Virtual ID (VID) is a temporary 16-digit number that maps to your Aadhaar but doesn't reveal your actual Aadhaar number. Here's how it helps with biometric security:

How to Generate VID

  1. Visit myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in โ†’ VID Generator
  2. Or use the mAadhaar app โ†’ Generate VID
  3. Enter your Aadhaar number and verify with OTP
  4. A 16-digit VID is generated and sent to your registered mobile
  5. Use this VID instead of your Aadhaar number wherever accepted

VID + Biometric Lock Strategy

  • Keep biometrics locked by default
  • When you need biometric authentication:
    1. Unlock biometrics temporarily via mAadhaar
    2. Use your VID instead of Aadhaar number for the authentication
    3. Lock biometrics again immediately after
  • This way, neither your biometrics nor your Aadhaar number is exposed

When Should You Unlock Biometrics?

You'll need to temporarily unlock biometrics for:

  • Opening a bank account (biometric eKYC)
  • Getting a new SIM card (telecom eKYC)
  • Government scheme enrollment (Aadhaar-based verification)
  • Aadhaar update at enrollment centre (biometric verification required)
  • PDS/ration shop (fingerprint-based ration collection)

For all other Aadhaar uses (online eKYC, DigiLocker, tax filing), OTP authentication works fine with biometrics locked.

What Happens When Biometrics Are Locked?

Scenario Works?
OTP-based authentication โœ… Yes
Demographic authentication โœ… Yes
Fingerprint authentication โŒ No (blocked)
Iris authentication โŒ No (blocked)
Aadhaar download/eAadhaar โœ… Yes (uses OTP)
mAadhaar app features โœ… Yes
Aadhaar update online โœ… Yes (uses OTP)
Ration via fingerprint at PDS โŒ No (need to unlock first)

Important Tips

  1. Lock biometrics today โ€” If you haven't already, do it now. It takes 2 minutes and prevents misuse
  2. Unlock only when needed โ€” Don't leave biometrics unlocked; lock them back after every use
  3. Use mAadhaar for quick toggles โ€” Much faster than the web portal for urgent unlocks
  4. Generate a VID โ€” Use it instead of your Aadhaar number for added privacy
  5. Check authentication history regularly โ€” See our Aadhaar Authentication History guide to monitor usage

Frequently Asked Questions

Will locking biometrics affect my Aadhaar card validity?

No. Your Aadhaar remains completely valid. Locking only prevents biometric (fingerprint/iris) authentication. All OTP-based services continue to work.

Can I lock biometrics permanently?

The lock stays active until you manually unlock. There's no expiry. You control it completely through the myAadhaar portal or mAadhaar app.

What if I need biometric authentication urgently and don't have phone access?

You'll need your registered mobile phone to unlock biometrics (OTP is required). Keep your Aadhaar-registered mobile number active and accessible. If you've lost access, update your mobile at an Aadhaar enrollment centre first.

Does biometric lock affect Aadhaar-linked ration (PDS)?

Yes. If your PDS shop uses fingerprint authentication, you'll need to unlock biometrics before collecting rations. Unlock via mAadhaar before visiting the shop, then lock again after.

How is VID different from biometric lock?

They serve different purposes. Biometric lock prevents fingerprint/iris authentication. VID hides your actual Aadhaar number. Using both together provides maximum security.

Can someone else unlock my biometrics?

No, unless they have access to your Aadhaar-registered mobile number (for OTP). Keep your registered mobile secure and never share OTPs with anyone.

Is the biometric lock/unlock service free?

Yes, completely free on both the myAadhaar portal and the mAadhaar app.
