How to Get a New Tap Water Connection

Water connections under AMRUT are given by your Urban Local Body (ULB) โ€” Municipal Corporation, Nagar Palika, or Town Panchayat.

Step 1 โ€” Contact Your ULB Water Department

Visit the Water Works / Water Supply Department of your Municipal Corporation or Nagar Panchayat.

Ask for the new water connection application form under Jal Jeevan Mission (urban) or AMRUT.

Step 2 โ€” Submit Application

Submit with:

  • Aadhaar card โ€” identity proof
  • Property documents (registry/NOC from owner if tenant)
  • Proof of address โ€” electricity bill, ration card
  • Photographs
  • Connection fee (nominal โ€” varies by city, typically โ‚น500โ€“โ‚น2,000)

Step 3 โ€” Inspection and Connection

ULB water department:

  1. Inspects the site for pipe laying feasibility
  2. Lays the connection pipe to your house
  3. Installs a water meter
  4. Activates the connection

Step 4 โ€” Monthly Bill Payment

After connection, you pay a monthly water tariff based on meter reading. Under AMRUT, tariff revision is done periodically. Many cities have free or subsidised water for BPL households.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. My city is not on the AMRUT list. How do I get a water connection?

Contact your state's Municipal Administration or Public Health Engineering Department (PHED). States have their own schemes for smaller towns not covered under AMRUT.

2. I live in a rented house. Can I apply for a new water connection?

Yes, as a tenant with the owner's NOC (No Objection Certificate). The connection is on the property, so the owner typically applies. As a tenant, discuss with your landlord.

3. My area has a pipeline but water doesn't come regularly. Whom do I complain to?

File a complaint with your Municipal Corporation / Nagar Palika โ€” at the water works office, on their website, or through the civic app (many cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru have apps). AMRUT targets 24ร—7 water supply โ€” persistent supply issues can be escalated to the State AMRUT nodal agency.

4. Is sewerage connection under AMRUT free?

A nominal connection fee is charged (varies by city). Sewer construction work is government-funded through AMRUT. The household connection from the main sewer line to the house is at the household's expense (typically โ‚น2,000โ€“โ‚น10,000 depending on distance).

5. What is the difference between AMRUT and Jal Jeevan Mission?

Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) covers rural areas โ€” every rural household gets a functional tap connection. AMRUT covers urban areas. Both aim at universal tap water access but operate in different geographies.
