BHIM App Bank Not Supported โ€” Check Compatible Banks & Alternatives

When you try to link your bank account on BHIM and see "Bank not supported" or your bank doesn't appear in the list, it usually means your bank hasn't integrated with BHIM's UPI system. This guide lists supported banks, explains why some banks are missing, and offers alternatives.

Why Is My Bank Not on BHIM?

Not all Indian banks support UPI through BHIM. Common reasons:

  1. Small cooperative banks haven't completed UPI integration with NPCI
  2. Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) may have limited UPI partnerships
  3. New small finance banks might support UPI on their own app but not on BHIM
  4. Payment banks (like Paytm Payments Bank, Airtel Payments Bank) support UPI but may not appear on all third-party apps
  5. The bank joined UPI recently and BHIM's app update hasn't included it yet

Banks Commonly NOT Supported on BHIM

These types of banks often don't work with BHIM:

  • District Cooperative Banks (e.g., Saraswat Co-op Bank may work, but many smaller ones don't)
  • State Cooperative Banks with limited digital infrastructure
  • Regional Rural Banks not sponsored by major UPI-enabled banks
  • Credit Union banks
  • Micro-finance institutions without UPI integration
  • NRI accounts at some banks may not support UPI

How to Check If Your Bank Supports BHIM

  1. Open the BHIM app
  2. Go to Bank Accounts โ†’ Link New Bank Account
  3. Search for your bank by name
  4. If it appears โ†’ it's supported. Tap to link.
  5. If it doesn't appear โ†’ it's currently not supported on BHIM

Alternatives If Your Bank Is Not on BHIM

Option 1: Use Your Bank's Own UPI App

Many banks that don't work with BHIM have their own UPI-enabled mobile banking app:

  • Your bank may support UPI through its own app even if BHIM doesn't list it
  • Check your bank's website or app store for their official mobile app
  • Look for "UPI" or "Pay" features within the app

Option 2: Try Other UPI Apps

Some UPI apps support more banks than BHIM:

  • Google Pay โ€” supports a wide range of banks
  • PhonePe โ€” often has more bank partnerships
  • Paytm โ€” supports many smaller banks through Paytm Payments Bank
  • Amazon Pay โ€” growing bank support

Option 3: Open an Account with a Supported Bank

If UPI is essential for you:

  1. Open a zero-balance savings account with a major bank (SBI, PNB, HDFC, ICICI)
  2. Many banks offer instant account opening online with Aadhaar e-KYC
  3. Link this new account to BHIM
  4. Transfer funds from your unsupported bank to this account via NEFT/IMPS

See our Aadhaar card guide for e-KYC requirements.

Option 4: Use India Post Payments Bank

If you're in a rural area:

  1. Visit your nearest Post Office to open an India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) account
  2. IPPB is fully supported on BHIM and other UPI apps
  3. Requires only Aadhaar for KYC
  4. Available in 1.5+ lakh post offices across India

Fix: Bank Appears in List but Linking Fails

If your bank is listed on BHIM but linking doesn't work:

  1. Check mobile number: Your number must match the one registered with that bank
  2. Debit card required: Keep your ATM/debit card handy for UPI PIN setup
  3. Account type: Only savings and current accounts work โ€” fixed deposits and loan accounts can't be linked
  4. Bank server down: Try again after a few hours
  5. Account status: Ensure your account is active (not dormant or frozen)
  6. KYC status: Incomplete KYC at your bank can block UPI registration

Cooperative Banks: Special Issues

Cooperative banks face unique challenges with UPI:

  1. Technology gap: Many cooperative banks lack the server infrastructure for real-time UPI processing
  2. NPCI onboarding: Banks must meet NPCI's technical standards โ€” smaller banks often can't comply
  3. Sponsor bank route: Some cooperative banks offer UPI through a sponsor bank (e.g., via SBI or HDFC infrastructure) โ€” check with your bank
  4. RBI mandate: RBI has been encouraging cooperative banks to adopt digital payments, so more banks join UPI every quarter

Important Tips

  1. Check NPCI's live members list periodically โ€” new banks are added regularly
  2. Don't download unofficial BHIM APKs claiming to support more banks โ€” these are scams
  3. One BHIM account can link multiple banks โ€” add 2-3 supported banks for flexibility
  4. Cooperative bank customers should ask their bank directly about UPI timeline
  5. Jan Dhan accounts at supported banks work with BHIM UPI

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: My cooperative bank is not on BHIM. Will it be added in the future?

Possibly. NPCI regularly onboards new banks. Check with your bank about their UPI integration timeline. In the meantime, use an alternative bank account or another UPI app.

Q2: Can I use BHIM with a post office savings account?

Yes, if you have an India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) account. Regular post office savings accounts (under Department of Posts) don't support UPI directly โ€” you need to open an IPPB account.

Q3: My bank is on BHIM but I can't find it when searching. What's wrong?

Try different search terms โ€” use the full bank name, abbreviation, or IFSC prefix. For example, search "SBI" or "State Bank" for State Bank of India. Also ensure your BHIM app is updated to the latest version.

Q4: Can NRI accounts be linked to BHIM?

UPI currently supports only domestic accounts. Most NRI/NRO/NRE accounts cannot be linked to BHIM or any UPI app. Check with your bank for specific exceptions.

Q5: Is there a difference in bank support between BHIM and other UPI apps?

Yes. Different UPI apps may support different sets of banks based on their integration partnerships. Google Pay and PhonePe often support more banks than BHIM. If your bank isn't on BHIM, try other UPI apps.

You can link multiple bank accounts from different banks to a single BHIM profile. There's no strict limit, but you can set only one account as the primary/default for payments.
