How Duplicate e-Shram Registrations Happen

Cause How It Happens
CSC camp registration Operators register workers in bulk without checking existing accounts
Forgot previous registration Worker registers again thinking they don't have an account
Technical glitch Portal error during registration creates partial duplicate
Aadhaar misuse Someone else uses your Aadhaar to register
Multiple CSC visits Different operators at different centers create separate registrations

Step 1: Identify Your Correct UAN

First, find out which UAN is your valid one:

Method 1: Login to Portal

  1. Visit register.eshram.gov.in
  2. Click "Already Registered"
  3. Enter your Aadhaar number + captcha
  4. Verify with OTP
  5. The system shows your active UAN — note this down

Method 2: Check SMS History

  1. Search your phone messages for "ESHRAM", "NDUW", or "UAN"
  2. You may find multiple UAN numbers if registered multiple times
  3. The most recent valid registration is usually the active one

Method 3: Call Helpline

  1. Call 14434 (toll-free)
  2. Provide your Aadhaar number
  3. Ask which UAN is active and which should be deactivated

Step 2: Check Details on Each UAN

If you have two UAN numbers:

  1. Log in using Aadhaar on the portal
  2. Check if the displayed profile has correct details (name, bank account, mobile, occupation)
  3. Note which UAN has the correct bank details — this is important for benefits
  4. The UAN with accurate details should be kept active

Step 3: Deactivate the Duplicate UAN

You cannot deactivate a duplicate UAN yourself online. Here are the available methods:

Method 1: Call Helpline 14434

  1. Call 14434 during working hours (Mon-Sat, 9:30 AM - 5:30 PM)
  2. Explain that you have duplicate UANs
  3. Provide:
    • Both UAN numbers
    • Your Aadhaar number
    • Which UAN you want to keep
  4. The helpline will raise a ticket for deactivation
  5. Resolution typically takes 7-15 working days

Method 2: Visit District Labour Office

  1. Go to your District Labour Commissioner's office
  2. Carry:
    • Aadhaar card (original + copy)
    • Both e-Shram cards (if downloaded)
    • Mobile phone for OTP verification
  3. Submit written application for duplicate UAN deactivation
  4. Get acknowledgment receipt
  5. Follow up after 15 days if not resolved

Method 3: File Online Grievance

  1. Visit eshram.gov.in
  2. Look for "Grievance" or "Complaint" section
  3. Select issue type: "Duplicate Registration"
  4. Enter both UAN numbers and your Aadhaar
  5. Describe the problem
  6. Submit and note the grievance number
  7. Track status using the grievance number

What Happens After Deactivation

  • The duplicate UAN is permanently deactivated
  • Your active UAN continues to work normally
  • Scheme benefits are routed to the active UAN only
  • Insurance enrollment (PMJJBY/PMSBY) continues under the active account
  • Download a fresh e-Shram card after deactivation is confirmed

If Someone Misused Your Aadhaar

If you find an e-Shram registration you didn't create:

  1. Don't panic — this is fixable
  2. Call 14434 and report unauthorized registration
  3. Visit District Labour Office with original Aadhaar
  4. File a police complaint if you suspect identity fraud
  5. Check other portals — if someone misused your Aadhaar for e-Shram, check for unauthorized accounts elsewhere too
  6. Lock your Aadhaar biometrics at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in to prevent future misuse

Prevention Tips

  • Register yourself online instead of through unknown agents
  • Never share Aadhaar OTP or copy with unauthorized persons
  • Lock Aadhaar biometrics when not in use at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in
  • Save your UAN — if you remember your UAN, you won't accidentally re-register
  • Verify before CSC registration — ask the operator to check if you're already registered before creating a new account

Important Tips

  • Keep both UAN numbers noted until deactivation is confirmed
  • Don't try to re-register — it will fail since Aadhaar is already linked
  • Update correct bank details on your active UAN to ensure benefits aren't disrupted
  • Follow up on helpline tickets if not resolved in 15 days
  • Save grievance number for tracking
