What is ESIC?

The Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) administers the ESI (Employees' State Insurance) scheme — a comprehensive social security programme providing medical, cash, maternity, disability, and death benefits to employees and their dependents.

ESIC is governed by the ESI Act, 1948 and managed by the Ministry of Labour and Employment. It is one of the largest social security systems in the world, covering over 14 crore beneficiaries.

The scheme is funded by contributions from both employers and employees, and beneficiaries receive free medical treatment at ESI hospitals and dispensaries across India.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ESIC registration mandatory for all companies?

ESIC registration is mandatory for establishments with 10 or more employees (in most states). Establishments with fewer employees are not required to register unless notified by the state government.

Can an employee opt out of ESIC?

Employees earning up to ₹21,000/month cannot opt out — ESIC coverage is mandatory. However, once their salary exceeds ₹21,000, they continue to be covered until the end of the contribution period.

What is the ESI Pehchan Card?

The Pehchan Card is a biometric smart card issued to ESI beneficiaries. It's used for identity verification at ESI hospitals. Until the card is issued, a temporary slip from the portal can be used.

Can ESI benefits be used at private hospitals?

ESI benefits are primarily for ESI hospitals and dispensaries. However, ESIC has tie-ups with certain private hospitals for super-specialty treatment. In emergencies, reimbursement claims can be filed for private hospital treatment.

What happens to ESI benefits after leaving a job?

Medical benefits continue for 3 months after leaving employment (if you contributed for 78 days in the previous contribution period). Cash benefits for ongoing treatment continue until recovery.

How do I find the nearest ESI hospital?

Visit esic.gov.in and use the hospital/dispensary locator. You can also call the ESIC helpline at 1800-11-2526 (toll-free).
