What is ESI Contribution?

The Employees' State Insurance (ESI) scheme provides medical, sickness, maternity, disability, and dependent benefits to employees earning up to ₹21,000/month (₹25,000 for persons with disability). Both the employee and employer contribute to the ESIC fund every month.

Current ESI Contribution Rates

Contributor Rate
Employee 0.75% of gross wages
Employer 3.25% of gross wages
Total 4% of gross wages

You can track whether your employer is depositing these contributions correctly using the ESIC online portal.

Who Can Check ESI Contributions?

  • Any insured person (IP) with an ESI number/IP number
  • Employees of establishments registered under the ESI Act
  • Your gross monthly wages must be ₹21,000 or less at the time of registration
  • You need your IP number (printed on your ESI card or available from HR)

  2. Select the contribution period (half-yearly: April-September or October-March)

How to Identify Employer Default

If your employer is not depositing ESI contributions despite deducting from your salary:

Signs of Default

  • IP passbook shows zero or missing entries for recent months
  • ESI card not issued by the employer
  • Medical benefits denied at ESIC hospital due to "non-contribution"

What to Do

  1. Check IP passbook first — confirm that contributions are actually missing
  2. Raise with HR — ask your employer's HR department to explain the gap
  3. File a grievance on ESIC portal:
    • Go to www.esic.gov.in → "Grievance"
    • Select "Insured Person Grievance"
    • Enter your IP number and details of the complaint
    • Upload any proof (salary slips showing ESI deduction)
  4. Complain to the Regional Office — contact the ESIC Regional Office having jurisdiction over your employer
  5. ESIC can take action — employers face penalties including prosecution for non-deposit of ESI contributions

ESI Benefits You Can Track

Benefit Eligibility
Medical benefit From day 1 of insurable employment
Sickness benefit 78 days contribution in 6-month period
Maternity benefit 70 days contribution in preceding 2 contribution periods
Disablement benefit From day 1 (for employment injury)
Dependent benefit On death of insured person due to employment injury

Important Tips

  1. Check contributions every month — don't wait until you need medical treatment to discover defaults
  2. Save your IP number — it's your identity in the ESIC system; note it down separately from your ESI card
  3. Link Aadhaar to ESI — this enables self-service access and faster claim processing
  4. Keep salary slips — they prove ESI was deducted from your salary, crucial if the employer defaults
  5. Contribution period matters — ESI works on half-yearly cycles; benefits depend on contributions in the preceding period

FAQs

Q1: How do I find my ESI IP number?

Your IP number is on your ESI card (also called Pehchan Card). If you don't have the card, ask your employer's HR. You can also find it on your salary slip if ESI is mentioned.

Q2: What if my employer hasn't registered me for ESI?

If your establishment has 10+ employees and you earn ≤₹21,000/month, ESI registration is mandatory. File a complaint with the nearest ESIC Regional Office or on the ESIC grievance portal.

Q3: Can I use ESIC hospitals if my employer hasn't paid contributions?

Yes, for the first time. ESIC hospitals generally provide treatment. However, repeated non-payment may affect your eligibility for cash benefits (sickness, maternity). The employer is liable, not you.

Q4: How often should I check my ESI contributions?

Check at least once every quarter. The contribution periods are April-September and October-March. Verify after each period ends.

Q5: Can I transfer my ESI when changing jobs?

ESI benefits are not transferable like PF. However, if you join a new ESI-covered employer, your new employer registers you (often with the same IP number). Past contributions count towards your benefit eligibility. See our PF transfer guide for EPF transfers.

Q6: What is the penalty for employers not paying ESI?

Employers face 12% interest per annum on delayed payments and can be prosecuted under the ESI Act with imprisonment up to 3 years and fines.

Q7: Is ESI applicable if my salary exceeds ₹21,000 after a raise?

Once covered under ESI, you continue to be covered until the end of the contribution period, even if your salary exceeds the threshold. Coverage ceases from the next contribution period.
