UPI Transaction Failed? How to Fix All UPI Payment Errors

UPI transactions can fail for many reasons — wrong PIN, bank server issues, daily limits, or technical errors. Each failure comes with a specific error code that tells you exactly what went wrong. This guide covers every common UPI error code, what it means, and how to fix it so your next payment goes through.

Common UPI Error Codes and Their Meanings

Here are the most frequent UPI error codes you'll encounter:

Error Code Meaning Quick Fix
U69 Payer/Payee PSP not available Wait and retry after 30 minutes
U16 Risk threshold exceeded Contact your bank
U30 Debit has been failed Check bank account balance
U28 Transaction amount limit exceeded Reduce amount or wait 24 hours
U09 Request time out Check internet and retry
U78 Transaction declined by payer Re-enter correct UPI PIN
U67 Account blocked/frozen Contact your bank branch
U14 Encryption error Update your UPI app
U54 Transaction ID not found Retry with fresh transaction
U66 Device fingerprint mismatch Re-register on the UPI app

Why UPI Transactions Fail

1. Incorrect UPI PIN

Entering the wrong UPI PIN is the most common reason for failed transactions. After 3 wrong attempts, your UPI PIN gets blocked for 24 hours. See our UPI PIN blocked guide for reset steps.

2. Insufficient Bank Balance

Your bank account must have enough balance including any minimum balance requirement. Some banks hold ₹1,000–₹5,000 as minimum balance which is not available for UPI transactions.

3. Daily Transaction Limit Exceeded

UPI has a per-transaction limit of ₹1,00,000 for most categories. Daily limits vary by bank:

Bank Daily UPI Limit Per Transaction
SBI ₹1,00,000 ₹1,00,000
HDFC ₹1,00,000 ₹1,00,000
ICICI ₹1,00,000 ₹1,00,000
Axis ₹1,00,000 ₹1,00,000
PNB ₹1,00,000 ₹1,00,000

Note: For UPI Lite, the limit is ₹500 per transaction and ₹2,000 wallet balance. Some categories like capital markets and insurance allow up to ₹2,00,000 per transaction.

4. Bank Server Down

When your bank's server is under maintenance or facing issues, UPI transactions fail with timeout errors (U09, U69). This is especially common during:

  • Month-end salary days (1st, last day of month)
  • Government payment dates
  • Festival seasons
  • Late night maintenance windows (usually 11:30 PM – 12:30 AM)

Check if your bank server is down using our UPI server status guide.

5. Inactive or Dormant Bank Account

Banks mark accounts as dormant if there's no transaction for 12–24 months. UPI won't work on dormant accounts. Visit your bank branch to reactivate.

6. Network or Internet Issues

UPI needs a stable internet connection during the entire transaction. Switching between WiFi and mobile data mid-transaction can cause failures.

Step-by-Step: How to Fix UPI Transaction Failed

Step 1: Check the Error Code

Open your UPI app (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM) → Go to transaction history → Tap the failed transaction → Note the error code and message.

Step 2: Verify Basic Requirements

  • āœ… Sufficient bank balance (check via passbook or net banking)
  • āœ… Stable internet connection (switch to mobile data if WiFi is weak)
  • āœ… UPI app is updated to latest version
  • āœ… Correct UPI PIN entered
  • āœ… Daily limit not exceeded

Step 3: Wait and Retry

Most UPI failures are temporary. Wait at least 30 minutes before retrying. Do NOT retry immediately multiple times — this can trigger fraud alerts and block your account.

Step 4: Try a Different UPI App

If one app consistently fails, try another UPI app linked to the same bank account. For example, switch from Google Pay to PhonePe or BHIM.

Step 5: Check Bank Account Status

If errors persist:

  1. Log in to your bank's net banking or mobile banking app
  2. Check if your account is active
  3. Verify that UPI/IMPS services are enabled
  4. Check for any bank-specific holds or blocks

Step 6: Contact Bank Customer Care

If nothing works, call your bank's customer care:

Bank Customer Care Number
SBI 1800-11-2211
HDFC 1800-120-1243
ICICI 1800-120-2040
Axis 1860-419-5555
PNB 1800-180-2222
BOB 1800-102-4455
Kotak 1860-266-2666

What to Do If Money Is Debited But Transaction Failed

If money was deducted from your account but the recipient didn't receive it, don't panic. As per RBI guidelines, the amount must be auto-reversed within 5 working days. Read our detailed guide on UPI money debited but not credited.

Important Tips

  1. Never share your UPI PIN with anyone, including bank employees or customer care agents
  2. Update your UPI app regularly to avoid encryption and security errors
  3. Don't retry failed transactions immediately — wait at least 30 minutes
  4. Keep your registered mobile number active — UPI is linked to your SIM, not just the phone
  5. Set transaction alerts via SMS to track every debit from your account

FAQs

Why does my UPI payment keep failing?

Repeated UPI failures usually indicate a bank-side issue. Check if your bank account is active, has sufficient balance, and UPI services are enabled. If the issue persists for more than 24 hours, contact your bank.

What does UPI error code U69 mean?

Error U69 means the payer or payee's payment service provider (PSP) is temporarily unavailable. This is a server-side issue. Wait 30 minutes and retry. If it continues, try a different UPI app.

Can I exceed the ₹1 lakh UPI limit?

For most person-to-person and merchant payments, the limit is ₹1,00,000 per transaction. However, NPCI has allowed higher limits (up to ₹2,00,000 or ₹5,00,000) for specific categories like capital markets, insurance, and hospital payments.

Why does UPI fail at night?

Many banks perform server maintenance between 11:30 PM and 12:30 AM. During this window, UPI transactions may fail or time out. Avoid making transactions during this period.

How many times can I retry a failed UPI transaction?

There is no fixed limit on retries, but avoid retrying more than 2–3 times within an hour. Excessive retries can trigger your bank's fraud detection and temporarily block UPI access.

What should I do if UPI shows "Transaction Declined by Bank"?

This means your bank has declined the transaction. Possible reasons: insufficient funds, account frozen, risk flag, or bank-imposed restrictions. Contact your bank's customer care for the specific reason.

Is my UPI PIN same as ATM PIN?

No. UPI PIN is separate from your ATM/debit card PIN. You set your UPI PIN when you first register on a UPI app using your debit card details. If blocked, see our UPI PIN reset guide.
