UPI PIN Blocked After 3 Attempts? How to Reset

Your UPI PIN gets blocked automatically when you enter the wrong PIN 3 times in a row. This is a security measure set by NPCI to prevent unauthorized access. The good news: you can reset it easily. This guide covers how long the block lasts, how to reset your UPI PIN on any app, and what to do if reset doesn't work.

Why Does UPI PIN Get Blocked?

UPI PIN is blocked when:

  • 3 consecutive wrong PIN entries โ€” The most common reason. Your bank blocks UPI access as a fraud prevention measure.
  • Suspicious transaction pattern โ€” Your bank may block UPI if it detects unusual activity.
  • Bank-initiated block โ€” Due to account-level security concerns.
  • SIM change or device change โ€” Some banks block UPI when the registered mobile number or device changes.

How Long Is UPI PIN Blocked?

After 3 wrong attempts, UPI PIN is blocked for 24 hours in most banks. Some banks may block it for shorter or longer periods:

Bank Block Duration Auto-Unblock?
SBI 24 hours Yes
HDFC 24 hours Yes
ICICI 24 hours Yes
Axis 24 hours Yes
PNB 24 hours Yes
BOB 24 hours Yes
Kotak 24 hours Yes

After the block period, you can either use your existing PIN (if you remember it) or reset it.

How to Reset UPI PIN โ€” Step by Step

Method 1: Reset via UPI App (Using Debit Card)

This works on Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, and all UPI apps.

  1. Open your UPI app
  2. Go to Bank Accounts or Payment Methods
  3. Select the bank account with the blocked PIN
  4. Tap "Forgot UPI PIN" or "Reset UPI PIN"
  5. Enter your debit card number (last 6 digits) and expiry date
  6. An OTP will be sent to your bank-registered mobile number
  7. Enter the OTP
  8. Set a new 4-digit or 6-digit UPI PIN (depends on your bank)
  9. Confirm the new PIN

Important: You need your physical debit card for this. If you don't have one, see Method 2.

Method 2: Reset via Bank's Mobile Banking App

Most bank apps have a UPI PIN reset option:

SBI (YONO):

  1. Open YONO SBI โ†’ UPI section
  2. Select account โ†’ Reset UPI PIN
  3. Authenticate with YONO credentials
  4. Set new UPI PIN

HDFC (MobileBanking):

  1. Open HDFC Mobile Banking
  2. Go to UPI โ†’ Manage UPI PIN
  3. Select Reset PIN
  4. Verify with debit card + OTP
  5. Set new PIN

ICICI (iMobile Pay):

  1. Open iMobile Pay
  2. Go to UPI Settings โ†’ Reset UPI PIN
  3. Authenticate and set new PIN

Method 3: Visit Bank Branch

If you don't have a debit card or can't receive OTP:

  1. Visit your home branch with Aadhaar and PAN card
  2. Request UPI PIN reset
  3. The bank will verify your identity and unblock your account
  4. You can then set a new PIN through any UPI app

See our Aadhaar guide if you need to update your Aadhaar details.

Method 4: Call Bank Customer Care

Some banks allow UPI PIN reset over phone after verification:

Bank Customer Care UPI Support
SBI 1800-11-2211 Available
HDFC 1800-120-1243 Available
ICICI 1800-120-2040 Available
Axis 1860-419-5555 Available
PNB 1800-180-2222 Available

Can I Reset UPI PIN Without Debit Card?

Without a debit card, your options are limited:

  • Bank mobile app โ€” Some banks (SBI YONO, ICICI iMobile) allow PIN reset using app credentials without debit card
  • Bank branch visit โ€” Always works, carry Aadhaar + PAN
  • Request new debit card โ€” Apply through net banking or bank app; virtual debit card details may also work

You cannot reset UPI PIN using only Aadhaar or just OTP without debit card details on third-party UPI apps.

NPCI Guidelines on UPI PIN

As per NPCI rules:

  • UPI PIN must be 4 or 6 digits (bank-dependent)
  • PIN is encrypted end-to-end โ€” no one, including the UPI app, can see it
  • Never share your UPI PIN via call, SMS, or email โ€” no bank or UPI app will ever ask for it
  • You can change UPI PIN anytime through your UPI app without blocking it first

Important Tips

  1. Wait the full 24 hours before trying to reset โ€” attempting during the block period may extend it
  2. Keep your debit card handy โ€” it's required for most PIN reset methods
  3. Use a strong PIN โ€” avoid birth year, 1234, or repeated digits
  4. Don't share your PIN โ€” banks and UPI apps will never ask for it over phone or message
  5. Register for SMS alerts โ€” get notified for every transaction to detect unauthorized access early

FAQs

How many wrong UPI PIN attempts are allowed?

You get 3 attempts. After the 3rd wrong attempt, UPI PIN is blocked for 24 hours by most banks.

Can I use UPI without a PIN?

No, UPI PIN is mandatory for all debit transactions. However, UPI Lite transactions (up to โ‚น500) can work without PIN once the UPI Lite wallet is loaded.

Will resetting UPI PIN affect my bank account?

No. Resetting UPI PIN only changes the PIN used for UPI transactions. Your bank account, balance, ATM PIN, and net banking credentials remain unchanged.

I reset my PIN but transactions still fail. What do I do?

Wait 30 minutes after resetting, then try again. If it still fails, the issue may be bank server-related. Check our UPI transaction failed guide for other causes.

Is UPI PIN same across all UPI apps?

Yes. UPI PIN is set at the bank account level, not the app level. If you set or reset your PIN on Google Pay, the same PIN works on PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, and any other UPI app linked to that account.

Can someone block my UPI PIN remotely?

No. UPI PIN can only be blocked by entering wrong attempts on a device where your bank account is linked to a UPI app. No one can block it remotely without access to your UPI app.

What if I forgot my UPI PIN but it's not blocked?

You can change it anytime. Go to your UPI app โ†’ Bank Account โ†’ Change UPI PIN โ†’ Enter debit card details โ†’ OTP โ†’ Set new PIN.
