How to Transfer FASTag to a New Vehicle or New Owner

Bought a new car? Sold your old one? Purchased a second-hand vehicle? You'll need to sort out the FASTag situation. The most important thing to know upfront: FASTags cannot be transferred from one vehicle to another. Each FASTag is permanently linked to a specific vehicle registration number. You'll need to close the old tag and get a new one.

Can You Transfer a FASTag to Another Vehicle?

No. As per NHAI and NPCI rules, a FASTag is linked to a specific vehicle registration number (RC number) at the time of issuance. This linking cannot be changed. The FASTag sticker also contains an RFID chip programmed with your vehicle's details.

What you need to do instead:

  • Deactivate/close the old FASTag
  • Get a refund of the remaining wallet balance
  • Purchase a new FASTag for the new vehicle

Scenario 1: You Sold Your Old Vehicle

What to Do with the Old FASTag

  1. Deactivate the old FASTag — Contact the issuing bank and request FASTag closure
  2. Get wallet balance refunded — The remaining balance will be credited to your linked bank account within 7-15 working days
  3. Remove the sticker — The new owner should not use your FASTag; it will cause transaction issues

Steps to Close Your Old FASTag

  1. Call your FASTag issuing bank's helpline
  2. Request FASTag deactivation/closure
  3. Provide: vehicle registration number, FASTag ID, registered mobile number
  4. The bank may ask for a written request or closure form
  5. Remaining wallet balance will be refunded to your bank account
  6. You'll get a confirmation SMS/email once the tag is closed

For the New Vehicle

  1. Purchase a new FASTag from any authorised bank or Point of Sale
  2. Provide: new vehicle RC, Aadhaar card, PAN card, passport photo
  3. Complete KYC
  4. Affix the new FASTag sticker on the new vehicle's windshield
  5. Recharge and start using

Scenario 2: You Bought a Second-Hand Vehicle

What to Do

The previous owner's FASTag (if still on the windshield) is linked to their bank account. Do not use it — toll charges will go to the previous owner's wallet, and the tag may get blacklisted for mismatched ownership.

Steps

  1. Ask the previous owner to deactivate their FASTag and remove the sticker
  2. Get a new FASTag in your name:
    • Visit any authorised FASTag Point of Sale (bank branch, toll plaza, online)
    • Carry: vehicle RC (with your name after transfer), Aadhaar, PAN, photo
    • The new tag will be linked to your vehicle's registration number
  3. Complete KYC at the bank
  4. Affix the new sticker on the windshield (inside, behind the rearview mirror area)
  5. Recharge and you're ready

Important: If the previous owner's tag is still active on the same vehicle number, your new FASTag may get flagged as a duplicate. Ensure the old tag is deactivated first.

Scenario 3: Same Owner, New Vehicle (Replacement/Upgrade)

If you're replacing your car but keeping the same bank:

  1. Close the old FASTag linked to the old vehicle
  2. Get wallet balance refunded or ask the bank if the balance can be credited to your new FASTag wallet
  3. Apply for a new FASTag with the new vehicle's RC
  4. Complete the process as described above

Some banks allow you to do this in a single visit — close old tag and issue new tag at the same time. Ask your bank branch.

Where to Get a New FASTag

Channel Details
Bank branch Visit your bank's branch with RC, Aadhaar, PAN
Toll plaza Most NH toll plazas have FASTag issuance counters
Online (bank website/app) Some banks allow online FASTag application with doorstep delivery
Amazon/Flipkart FASTag kits available online (you still need to activate and complete KYC)
Paytm FASTag Available through Paytm app with doorstep delivery

Cost: FASTag issuance fee is typically ₹100-500 (varies by bank), plus a minimum wallet recharge of ₹200.

Documents Required for New FASTag

  • Vehicle Registration Certificate (RC) — must show the current owner's name
  • Aadhaar Card of the vehicle owner
  • PAN Card (for KYC)
  • Passport-size photo
  • Vehicle details — chassis number, engine number, vehicle class (all available on the RC)

How to Properly Affix the FASTag Sticker

  1. Clean the inside of the windshield (top centre, behind the rearview mirror)
  2. Peel the FASTag sticker backing
  3. Stick it firmly on the glass — RFID side facing outward (toward the toll reader)
  4. Do not cover it with any tinting film or sticker
  5. Ensure it's flat with no air bubbles

Note: Improper placement is a common reason FASTag doesn't scan at toll plazas.

Timeline Summary

Action Time Required
Old FASTag deactivation 1-3 working days
Wallet balance refund 7-15 working days
New FASTag issuance Same day (at bank/toll) or 3-5 days (online delivery)
New FASTag activation Immediate after KYC

Important Tips

  1. Never use someone else's FASTag — It will cause transaction disputes and possible blacklisting
  2. Close old tags promptly — An unclosed tag on a sold vehicle can lead to disputes if the new owner gets a new FASTag (duplicate tag detection)
  3. One vehicle, one FASTag — NHAI enforces this strictly; duplicates get blacklisted. See our FASTag blacklisted guide for more
  4. Update RC before getting FASTag — If you bought a second-hand vehicle, complete the RC ownership transfer at RTO first, then apply for FASTag
  5. Keep old FASTag details — Save the old tag ID and issuing bank info until the wallet refund is processed

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I transfer my FASTag from old car to new car?

A: No. FASTags are permanently linked to a vehicle registration number and cannot be transferred. You must close the old FASTag and get a new one for the new vehicle.

Q: What happens to the balance in my old FASTag?

A: When you close/deactivate the old FASTag, the remaining wallet balance is refunded to your linked bank account within 7-15 working days.

Q: I bought a used car with a FASTag sticker on it. Can I use it?

A: No. That FASTag is linked to the previous owner's bank account. You need to remove it and get a new FASTag in your name with your RC details.

Q: Can I get a FASTag before my RC is transferred to my name?

A: The FASTag application requires the RC with the current owner's name. You should complete the RC transfer at the RTO first. Some banks may issue a temporary tag, but it's best to wait for the RC update.

Q: How many FASTags can I have?

A: One FASTag per vehicle. But you can have multiple FASTags if you own multiple vehicles — one tag linked to each vehicle's registration number.

Q: What if the previous owner doesn't deactivate their FASTag on my new (used) vehicle?

A: You can still apply for a new FASTag. The system will detect the duplicate and may blacklist the old tag. However, to avoid complications, request the previous owner to close their tag, or inform your issuing bank about the situation.

Q: Is there a penalty for not having a FASTag?

A: Yes. Vehicles without a valid FASTag at National Highway toll plazas must pay double the toll fee as per NHAI rules.
