Common HDFC UPI Errors and Fixes

1. Bank Server Down / Technical Decline

The most common UPI error: "Bank server is down, please try after some time" or error code U69.

What this means:

  • HDFC Bank's UPI server is overloaded or under maintenance
  • This is on the bank's end — nothing wrong with your account or app

Fixes:

  1. Wait 15-30 minutes and try again — server issues are usually temporary
  2. Avoid peak hours: UPI servers face maximum load at:
    • Month-end (salary days: 28th-1st)
    • Evening hours (6 PM - 9 PM)
    • Festival/sale days
  3. Check if HDFC is down for everyone:
  4. Try a different UPI app: If Google Pay fails, try PhonePe or BHIM — sometimes one app's connection to the bank works better
  5. If persistent (multiple hours): Call HDFC at 1800-202-6161

Common UPI error codes:

Code Meaning Fix
U69 Bank server down Wait and retry
U28 Transaction declined by bank Check account balance/status
U30 Debit failed at bank Check account freeze/hold
U16 Risk threshold exceeded Daily limit reached
U78 PSP request timeout Retry the transaction

2. VPA (UPI ID) Not Found

Error: "VPA not found" or "Invalid UPI ID" when someone tries to send you money or during setup.

Fixes:

  1. Check your VPA format: It should be yourname@hdfcbank or mobilenumber@okaxis (for Google Pay), mobilenumber@ybl (PhonePe)
  2. VPA not created yet: If you haven't completed UPI registration, your VPA doesn't exist
  3. Re-register your UPI ID:
    • Open your UPI app (Google Pay/PhonePe)
    • Remove HDFC bank account
    • Add it again — this recreates your VPA
  4. Bank account linking issue: Your bank account may not be properly linked
  5. Account blocked/dormant: A blocked HDFC account won't have a working VPA — see our HDFC account blocked fix guide

Share the correct VPA:

  • Google Pay: Open app > Profile picture > Your UPI ID
  • PhonePe: Profile > My UPI IDs
  • BHIM: Profile > UPI ID

3. SMS Not Sent / Registration Failed

UPI apps need to send a registration SMS from your registered mobile number. This is the most common setup failure.

Fixes:

  1. Check mobile number: The SIM in your phone must be the one registered with HDFC Bank
  2. Sufficient balance: You need ₹1-₹2 balance for the outgoing SMS charge
  3. Dual SIM phones: The app may try to send SMS from the wrong SIM
    • Android fix: Go to phone Settings > SIM > Default SMS SIM — set it to your HDFC-registered number
    • Or temporarily disable the other SIM
  4. SMS permissions: Grant SMS send/receive permissions to the UPI app
  5. DND issue: SMS should still work with DND, but try sending START 0 to 1909
  6. Outgoing SMS blocked: Some prepaid plans block outgoing premium SMS. Contact your mobile operator
  7. Network issue: Ensure you have mobile network (not just Wi-Fi) — SMS requires cellular

If SMS still fails:

  • Restart your phone with only the registered SIM active
  • Try registration from a different UPI app
  • Contact HDFC to verify your registered mobile number

4. Daily Transaction Limit Exceeded

HDFC Bank has UPI transaction limits set by both the bank and NPCI.

Current HDFC UPI limits:

Limit Type Amount
Per transaction ₹1,00,000
Daily limit ₹1,00,000
Per transaction (tax, education, IPO) ₹5,00,000

Fixes:

  1. Wait until midnight (12 AM) — daily limits reset at midnight
  2. Check your bank-specific limit: Some HDFC account types may have lower UPI limits
  3. Use NetBanking or NEFT for amounts above UPI limits — see our HDFC Net Banking guide
  4. Split the transaction: If sending to the same person, split into multiple payments across days

Note: These are NPCI-mandated limits that HDFC Bank cannot increase beyond the maximum. Individual UPI apps may have additional lower limits.

5. UPI MPIN Reset

Your UPI MPIN (4 or 6 digit PIN) is needed for every transaction. If forgotten or blocked, here's how to reset:

Reset UPI MPIN on Google Pay:

  1. Open Google Pay
  2. Go to your HDFC bank account
  3. Tap "Forgot UPI PIN"
  4. Enter your debit card last 6 digits and expiry date
  5. Verify with OTP sent to registered mobile
  6. Set a new UPI PIN

Reset UPI MPIN on PhonePe:

  1. Open PhonePe
  2. Go to My Money > Bank Accounts > HDFC
  3. Tap "Reset UPI PIN"
  4. Enter debit card details and OTP
  5. Create new PIN

Reset on BHIM:

  1. Open BHIM app
  2. Select HDFC bank account
  3. Tap "Reset UPI PIN"
  4. Follow debit card + OTP verification
  5. Set new PIN

Common MPIN errors:

  • "Wrong PIN entered": You have 3 attempts before temporary block. Wait 24 hours or reset
  • "Unable to reset PIN": Your debit card may be blocked or expired. Get a new debit card from HDFC
  • "OTP not received": Check registered mobile number and network. See SMS fix section above

Other Common HDFC UPI Issues

Transaction Debited but Not Credited to Receiver

  1. Wait 30 minutes to 4 hours — UPI reversals happen automatically in most cases
  2. Check transaction status in the UPI app (Success/Pending/Failed)
  3. If money is debited and shows "Pending": Wait 48 hours for auto-reversal
  4. Raise complaint in app: Google Pay > transaction > Report > Money not received/debited
  5. Escalate: Call HDFC 1800-202-6161 with transaction reference number (UTR)

"Payee PSP Not Available" Error

  • The receiver's bank/UPI server is down — this is not your issue
  • Ask the receiver to check their bank server status
  • Try again later

UPI Collect Request Not Received

  • Check your UPI app notifications
  • The collect request expires in a few minutes — ask sender to resend
  • Check if you've blocked the sender's VPA

Escalation Steps

  1. In-app complaint: Use the UPI app's help/support section first
  2. HDFC Phone Banking: 1800-202-6161 (toll-free)
  3. NPCI dispute: If not resolved in 15 days, complain on NPCI portal
  4. Banking Ombudsman: File at cms.rbi.org.in after 30 days
  5. National Consumer Helpline: Call 1800-11-4000

Important Tips

  • Keep your debit card active — you need it for UPI PIN reset
  • Update your UPI app regularly — outdated versions cause compatibility issues
  • Don't share your UPI PIN with anyone — no bank or app will ever ask for it
  • Check account balance before large UPI transactions to avoid failures
  • Use the same phone and SIM that's registered with HDFC for smooth UPI operations

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Why does HDFC UPI fail during month-end?

HDFC Bank's UPI servers face heavy load during salary days (28th-1st of each month). Server capacity is limited, leading to timeouts and failures. Try during off-peak hours (early morning or afternoon).

Q2: Can I use HDFC UPI if my account has minimum balance issue?

Yes, but if your balance is below the minimum, the bank may charge penalties. UPI transactions will work as long as you have sufficient balance for the transaction amount.

Q3: How do I change my UPI ID linked to HDFC account?

You can create a new UPI ID in your UPI app settings or switch to a different app. Each app creates its own VPA (e.g., @okaxis for Google Pay, @ybl for PhonePe).

Q4: HDFC UPI works on PhonePe but not Google Pay. Why?

Each UPI app has its own connection (PSP handle) to the bank. If one app's connection is having issues, another may work fine. This is usually a temporary server-side issue.

Q5: Can I use UPI without a debit card?

You need a debit card for initial UPI PIN setup. After that, you don't need the physical card. If your debit card is expired, get a replacement from HDFC before setting up UPI. For other HDFC app issues, check our HDFC mobile banking fix guide.

Q6: What is the maximum UPI transaction limit for HDFC Bank?

The standard limit is ₹1,00,000 per transaction and per day. For certain categories like tax payments, insurance, and education, the limit is ₹5,00,000.

Q7: My HDFC UPI transaction is stuck on "Pending." How long should I wait?

Wait up to 48 hours. Most pending transactions auto-reverse within 4-24 hours. If still pending after 48 hours, raise a complaint in the UPI app and call HDFC at 1800-202-6161 with the UTR number.
