JEE Main Exam Guide ā Engineering Entrance Exam
JEE Main is India's biggest engineering entrance exam. Every year, lakhs of students appear for this exam to get admission into NITs, IIITs, GFTIs and other top engineering colleges. It is also the gateway to JEE Advanced, which is required for IIT admission.
This guide covers everything you need to know about JEE Main ā eligibility, exam pattern, syllabus, how to apply, preparation strategy and counselling process.
What is JEE Main?
JEE Main (Joint Entrance Examination Main) is a national-level engineering entrance exam conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). It serves two main purposes:
- Direct admission to NITs, IIITs and Government Funded Technical Institutions (GFTIs) based on JEE Main rank.
- Eligibility for JEE Advanced ā only the top 2,50,000 JEE Main qualifiers can appear for JEE Advanced (for IIT admission).
JEE Main is conducted in two sessions each year (January and April). You can appear in one or both sessions, and your best score is considered for ranking.
JEE Main Papers

- NTA Abhyas App (free mock tests)
- Online platforms like Unacademy, Physics Wallah, BYJU'S
Counselling Process (JoSAA)
After JEE Main results are declared, admissions to NITs, IIITs and GFTIs happen through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA).
How JoSAA Counselling Works
- Register on JoSAA portal: josaa.nic.in
- Fill your choices ā select colleges and branches in order of preference
- Seat allotment happens in multiple rounds (usually 5-6 rounds)
- Accept the seat ā pay the seat acceptance fee and report to the allotted college
- Document verification at the reporting centre
Key Points
- JoSAA counselling is completely online (choice filling and seat allotment)
- You must report physically to the allotted institute for document verification
- Carry all original documents: Class 10 & 12 marksheets, category certificate, JEE Main scorecard, photo ID
- If not satisfied with the allotted seat, you can float (keep current seat and wait for upgrades in next round) or freeze (accept and exit)
CSAB Counselling
After JoSAA rounds, the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) conducts additional rounds for vacant seats in NITs and IIITs.
Important Tips
-
Start with NCERT ā Don't jump to advanced books before mastering NCERT concepts. Most JEE Main questions come directly from NCERT.
-
Take mock tests regularly ā Mock tests improve time management and help you get comfortable with the online exam format.
-
Don't ignore negative marking ā In MCQ sections, avoid random guessing. If you can eliminate 2 options, then attempt the question.
-
Focus on Section B ā Numerical value questions have no negative marking. Even partial attempts can boost your score.
-
Keep Class 12 boards in mind ā JEE Main and board exams have overlapping syllabi. Preparing well for one helps with the other.
-
Stay healthy and consistent ā Regular study (6-8 hours daily) is better than last-minute marathon sessions. Sleep well and eat right.
-
Revise regularly ā Make a revision schedule. Revise formulas and key concepts every week.
-
Use both sessions wisely ā Appear in both January and April sessions. Treat January as a practice run if needed.
