How to Apply for LPG Subsidy & Ujjwala Yojana — Free Gas Connection

If you belong to a Below Poverty Line (BPL) family and don't have an LPG gas connection, the Indian government provides a free LPG connection under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY). If you already have a connection, you can receive an LPG subsidy directly in your bank account through DBTL (Direct Benefit Transfer for LPG).

This guide covers everything — from applying for a free connection to checking your subsidy status and booking refills.

Part 1: Ujjwala Yojana — Free LPG Connection

What is Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY)?

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana is a government scheme launched in 2016 to provide free LPG connections to women from poor households. Under PMUY 2.0 (launched in 2021), the scheme was expanded to cover more categories. As of February 2026, over 10.5 crore connections have been released under this scheme.

Key benefits:

  • Free LPG connection (no security deposit)
  • Free first refill and hot plate (stove) in many cases
  • Connection issued in the name of the woman of the household

Who is Eligible for Free LPG Connection?

You can apply if the adult woman in your household belongs to any of these categories:

  1. BPL families — name in SECC-2011 (Socio-Economic Caste Census) list
  2. SC/ST households

  4. Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) beneficiaries
  5. Forest dwellers
  6. Most Backward Classes (MBC)
  7. Tea and ex-tea garden tribes
  8. People living in islands and river islands
  9. PMUY 2.0 addition: Migrant workers and families not covered above — no address proof or ration card needed (self-declaration accepted)

Important conditions:

  • The applicant must be a woman aged 18 years or above

Part 2: LPG Subsidy (DBTL) — For Existing Users

What is LPG Subsidy (DBTL)?

DBTL stands for Direct Benefit Transfer for LPG, also known as PAHAL. Under this scheme:

  1. You pay the market price for your LPG cylinder at the time of purchase
  2. The government subsidy amount is transferred directly to your Aadhaar-linked bank account
  3. You receive up to 12 subsidised refills per year (for 14.2 kg domestic cylinders)

Note: Subsidy amounts change frequently based on international LPG prices. Sometimes the subsidy may be ₹0 when market prices are low.

  2. Log in to your account
  3. Look for the "GiveItUp" or "Give Up Subsidy" option

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Can men apply for Ujjwala Yojana?

No. The LPG connection under PMUY is issued only in the name of a woman (adult female member of the household). The male members cannot be the primary applicant.

2. How many subsidised cylinders can I get per year?

You are entitled to a maximum of 12 subsidised refills per year for a 14.2 kg domestic cylinder. Refills beyond 12 will be at full market price.

3. I applied for Ujjwala but haven't received the connection. What should I do?

Visit your nearest LPG distributor with your acknowledgement number and Aadhaar card. You can also call the respective OMC helpline number to check your application status.

4. My subsidy is not coming to my bank account. Why?

This can happen if:

  • Your Aadhaar is not linked to your LPG connection
  • Your Aadhaar is not seeded with your bank account
  • Your bank account details are incorrect in the system
  • You have exceeded 12 refills in the year

Visit your distributor or OMC portal to verify and update your details.

5. Can I have two LPG connections at the same address?

No. Only one subsidised domestic LPG connection per household is allowed. If a duplicate is found, the subsidy will be blocked.

6. How do I check if my name is in the Ujjwala Yojana beneficiary list?

Visit the PMUY website (https://www.pmuy.gov.in/) and look for the beneficiary list section. You can also check with your local LPG distributor.

7. What is the cost of an LPG cylinder under Ujjwala Yojana?

The first refill is free. After that, you pay the same market price as other consumers, and the subsidy (if applicable) is transferred to your bank account via DBTL.
