  • No minimum balance required to open or maintain the account
  • One account per person (unless opening a Small Account with relaxed KYC)

Important Tips

  1. Link Aadhaar immediately — all government DBT benefits (LPG subsidy, scholarships, MNREGA wages) require Aadhaar-linked bank accounts. See our Aadhaar guide.
  2. Enrol in PMJJBY + PMSBY — your Jan Dhan account makes you eligible for PMJJBY (₹436/year life insurance) and PMSBY (₹20/year accident insurance).
  3. Keep the RuPay card active — the ₹2 lakh accident insurance on RuPay requires at least one successful transaction in the 90 days before the accident.
  4. Don't let the account go dormant — do at least one transaction every 12 months to keep the account active.
  5. Women get priority for overdraft — the ₹10,000 overdraft facility is preferentially given to women account holders.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1: Can I open Jan Dhan account if I already have a savings account?

Yes, but you cannot open multiple Jan Dhan accounts. If you have a regular savings account, you can convert it to a Jan Dhan account or open a new one (and close the old one if needed).

Q2: Is there any charge for maintaining zero balance?

No. There are no charges for maintaining zero balance in a Jan Dhan account. This is a key feature of the scheme.

Q3: Can I deposit any amount?

Yes, you can deposit any amount. There is no upper limit on deposits in a full KYC Jan Dhan account. For Small Accounts (relaxed KYC), the balance limit is ₹50,000 and withdrawal limit is ₹10,000/month.

Q4: Will I earn interest on my deposits?

Yes. Jan Dhan accounts earn the same savings account interest rate as regular accounts (typically 2.7-3% per annum).

Q5: Can I use my Jan Dhan account for UPI/PhonePe/GPay?

Yes. You can link your Jan Dhan account to any UPI app and make digital payments. See our UPI guide for setup instructions.

Q6: What happens to the account if the holder dies?

The nominee can claim the balance. If the deceased had an active RuPay card with a qualifying transaction, the nominee can also claim ₹2 lakh accidental insurance (if death was due to accident).

Q7: Is Jan Dhan account available at post offices?

Yes. India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) and Department of Posts offer Jan Dhan accounts, especially useful in rural areas without bank branches.
