Frequently Asked Questions

My husband died in a road accident but we don't have a BPL card. Can we still apply?

BPL status is required. If you don't have a BPL card but are genuinely poor, contact the District Social Welfare Officer — they can assess BPL status through income verification and recommend the grant. Also apply for a BPL ration card through your Gram Panchayat.

The accident happened 4 months ago. Can I still apply?

The official deadline is 3 months from the accident date. Applications after 3 months may be considered on compassionate grounds by the district officer — apply immediately and explain the delay in writing.

Can I apply for this along with road accident insurance from the vehicle owner's insurance?

Yes — this scheme is government assistance and is separate from private vehicle insurance claims. You can claim both independently.

Who receives the ₹2 lakh — the widow, parents, or children?

The legal heir as per family relationship:

  • Spouse (widow/widower) gets first priority
  • If no spouse: children
  • If no children: parents Only one family member can receive the full ₹2 lakh.

The FIR mentions "suspicious death" not "accident." Are we eligible?

The panchayati/inquest report and post-mortem should confirm the nature of death. If classified as accidental by the post-mortem and magistrate's inquiry, the application can proceed. Purely suspicious/criminal deaths may not qualify.
