What is NMMS Scholarship?

National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) is a central government scholarship scheme for meritorious students from economically weaker sections, studying in Class 8. It provides ₹12,000 per year (₹1,000/month) from Class 9 through Class 12 — 4 years of financial support to prevent dropout at the secondary school level.

The scheme is run by the Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSEL) under the Ministry of Education, and selection is through a state-level examination held every year in November.

Key features:

  • ₹12,000/year (₹1,000/month) for Classes 9–12
  • Selected via state examination — not just marks
  • Only for students in government / government-aided schools
  • 100,000 scholarships per year nationwide
  • No caste restriction — purely merit-based for low-income families

Who is Eligible?

For the Exam (Class 8 students):

  • Must be studying in Class 8 in a government or government-aided school (NOT private unaided school)
  • Annual family income must not exceed ₹3.5 lakh
  • Must have scored at least 55% in Class 7 final exam (50% for SC/ST students)

For Continuation (Class 9–12):

  • Must maintain 55% marks each year to continue receiving the scholarship
  • Must study in a government or government-aided school for Class 9–10; any school for Class 11–12

Exam Pattern (NMMS State-Level Exam)

Each state conducts its own NMMS examination in November:

Test Questions Duration
MAT (Mental Ability Test) 90 MCQs 90 minutes
SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) 90 MCQs 90 minutes

SAT covers: Science (30), Social Studies (35), Mathematics (25) — Class 7 and 8 syllabus

Minimum qualifying score: 40% overall (32% for SC/ST/PH)

State-wise merit lists are prepared — top students get the scholarship based on available state quota.

How to Apply — Step by Step

Applications are submitted through your school — students do NOT apply directly online.

  1. Inform your Class 8 teacher that you want to appear for NMMS exam
  2. Your school submits your application to the District Education Officer / State Scholarship Cell
  3. You appear for the state NMMS exam (usually November)
  4. Results are announced — selected students apply on scholarships.gov.in
  5. After results, register on NSP and apply under "State Schemes → [Your State] → NMMS"
  6. Upload documents and complete enrollment

Documents Required

  1. Aadhaar card (student)
  2. Income certificate — family annual income below ₹3.5 lakh
  3. Class 7 marksheet (showing 55%+ marks)
  4. Caste certificate (SC/ST students for relaxed criteria)
  5. School enrollment certificate (from government/aided school)
  6. Bank account in student's name (Aadhaar-linked for DBT)
  7. NMMS selection/merit certificate (provided after exam result)

Renewal Process (Class 10, 11, 12)

Scholarship must be renewed every year:

  1. Log in to scholarships.gov.in
  2. Submit current year marksheet showing 55%+ marks
  3. School/institution verifies enrollment
  4. Renewed scholarship continues for the next class

Important: If you score below 55% in any year, the scholarship is suspended for that year and must be resumed by scoring 55%+ in the next attempt.

Frequently Asked Questions

I study in a private school. Can I appear for NMMS?

No — NMMS is specifically for students in government and government-aided schools. Students in private unaided schools are not eligible.

Is there a separate quota for girls or SC/ST students?

There is no separate sub-quota — it is a merit list. However, SC/ST students get a relaxed qualifying score (50% in Class 7 instead of 55%, and 32% in exam instead of 40%).

My family income is ₹4 lakh. Can I still apply?

No — the income limit is ₹3.5 lakh/year. Families above this threshold are not eligible for NMMS.

What happens to the scholarship in Class 11 if I switch to a private school?

For Classes 11–12, you can study in any recognized school (including private). The scholarship continues as long as you score 55%+ and renew annually on NSP.

I am repeating Class 9 due to failure. Does my NMMS continue?

No — the scholarship is suspended if you fail or do not score 55%. Once you clear with 55%+, you can apply for reinstatement. Contact your state education department.

Is the ₹12,000 for 10 months or 12 months?

The scheme provides ₹1,000/month for 10 months of the academic year = ₹10,000/year (earlier structure) — the current structure gives ₹12,000/year. The actual payment schedule varies by state.
