When to Re-issue OCI Card

You need to get a new OCI card in these situations:

  • New passport issued (after OCI card was issued before age 20, or after 50 years of age if the new passport has a different number)
  • Change in personal details — name change after marriage
  • Original OCI card damaged or lost
  • Re-issue for children — when they get a new passport at age 15-18 or after 20

Mandatory Re-issue Rules

  • If OCI was issued before age 20: Re-issue when getting a new passport after completing 20 years
  • If OCI was issued between 20-50 years: No mandatory re-issue needed
  • If OCI was issued after 50 years: Re-issue once when getting a new passport after 50

Important Tips

  • Don't travel to India with only an OCI card — you MUST carry your foreign passport along with the OCI card
  • Keep original documents safe — embassy may request originals during processing
  • Apply early — OCI processing can take weeks; don't wait until the last minute before travel
  • PIO card conversion — if you have an old PIO card, convert it to OCI (PIO cards are no longer valid)
  • Register with the Indian embassy — if residing abroad, register with the embassy for emergency assistance
