Why You Might Need a Duplicate PAN Card

Your PAN number never changes, but there are several situations where you need a new PAN card:

  • Lost or stolen — your physical card is missing
  • Damaged or illegible — card is torn, faded, or unreadable
  • Name change after marriage — your legal name has changed
  • Incorrect details — wrong name, date of birth, or other errors on the card
  • Outdated card format — you want the new PAN 2.0 card with QR code

Important: Your 10-digit PAN number remains the same. A duplicate PAN card only replaces the physical or digital card — it does not assign a new number.

Reprint vs Correction — Which Do You Need?

Before applying, understand the difference:

Scenario What to Apply For Form
Lost, damaged, or need a fresh copy Reprint / Duplicate PAN (no changes to data) Request for Reprint of PAN Card
Name change after marriage, DOB correction, address update PAN Correction / Change Changes or Correction in PAN Data
  • Reprint means your existing details are correct — you just need a new card.
  • Correction means you need to update information (name, DOB, father's name, etc.) and get a new card with updated details.

For name correction after marriage, you must apply for correction, not reprint. See our detailed guide on PAN card correction online.

FAQ — Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a duplicate PAN card without knowing my PAN number?

Yes. You can find your PAN number by using the "Know Your PAN" facility on the Income Tax e-Filing portal using your name, date of birth, and Aadhaar or mobile number. Once you have the PAN number, proceed with the reprint application.

Is there a limit on how many times I can reprint my PAN card?

No, there is no limit. You can apply for a reprint as many times as needed by paying the applicable fee each time.

Can I apply for a duplicate PAN card offline?

Yes. Visit any PAN facilitation centre (Protean or UTIITSL), fill in the physical form, attach the required documents, and submit with the fee. Physical centres are available in most cities and district headquarters.

How long does it take to get a physical duplicate PAN card?

A physical PAN card is typically dispatched within 15–20 business days from the date of application. You will receive it via India Post or courier at your registered address.

Do I need to apply separately for PAN 2.0?

No. All new PAN cards issued — whether fresh, reprint, or correction — now come in the PAN 2.0 format with a QR code. Your existing PAN card without QR code remains valid.

Can I use e-PAN as valid proof of identity?

Yes. The e-PAN (digital PDF) downloaded from the Income Tax portal is legally valid and accepted as proof of identity and PAN verification for financial transactions.

What if my PAN card has my maiden name — is it still valid?

The PAN card with your maiden name is technically valid, but it may cause issues with bank accounts, ITR filing, and other documents that have your married name. It is recommended to update your PAN card to avoid mismatches.
