Method 1: Track PAN Application via NSDL / Protean
If you applied for a PAN card through Protean (formerly NSDL), you can track your application using the 15-digit acknowledgment number you received after submitting the form.
Steps to Check
- Visit the Protean PAN status tracking page: https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/pantan/StatusTrack.html
- Select PAN - New/Change Request from the application type dropdown
- Enter your 15-digit acknowledgment number (starts with your application date, e.g.,

- Click on Track PAN Application or PAN Card Status
- Enter your application coupon number (provided at the time of application)
- Enter your date of birth
- Enter the captcha and click Submit

What Does "Inoperative PAN" Mean?

Method 7: How to Reactivate an Inoperative PAN
If your PAN has become inoperative because it was not linked with Aadhaar, you can reactivate it by completing the linking process with a late fee.
Steps to Reactivate
- Pay the late fee of ₹1,000 through the e-Pay Tax portal
- Select challan "AY 2025-26" → Major Head 0021 → Minor Head 500 → Fee type Others
- Complete payment via net banking, debit card, or UPI
- Link Aadhaar with PAN on the Income Tax portal after payment
- Your PAN will be reactivated within 30 days of successful Aadhaar linking
Important: Keep the challan receipt safe. The reactivation process may take up to 30 days from the date of linking.
