What is OCI Card?

OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) is a special status granted by the Government of India to foreign nationals of Indian origin. It is not a dual citizenship โ€” India does not allow dual nationality โ€” but it provides lifelong benefits similar to permanent residency.

The OCI card allows holders to:

  • Travel to India without a separate visa
  • Live and work in India without restrictions
  • Purchase property (except agricultural land and plantation property)
  • Open NRO/NRE bank accounts in India
  • Access government services on par with NRIs

OCI replaced the older PIO (Person of Indian Origin) card scheme in 2015. All existing PIO cards are now deemed as OCI cards.

Who is Eligible for OCI?

You are eligible for OCI if you meet any of these criteria:

  1. Former Indian citizen who acquired citizenship of another country (after 26 January 1950)
  2. Child or grandchild of an Indian citizen or former Indian citizen
  3. Great-grandchild of an Indian citizen (if registered before the cutoff)
  4. Spouse of an Indian citizen or OCI cardholder, married for at least 2 years
  5. Minor child of an Indian citizen or OCI cardholder

Who is NOT Eligible?

  • Person who was ever a citizen of Pakistan or Bangladesh
  • Person whose parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents were citizens of Pakistan or Bangladesh
  • Person who served in the military of another country (some exceptions apply)
