Link Voter ID with Aadhaar: How to Link Online and Offline

The Election Commission of India has introduced linking of Voter ID (EPIC) with Aadhaar card to clean up the electoral roll by removing duplicate entries. This linking is done through Form 6B and is currently voluntary. This guide covers all methods to link your Voter ID with Aadhaar.

The primary purpose of Voter ID-Aadhaar linking is to:

  • Remove duplicate voter entries across multiple constituencies
  • Authenticate voter identity using Aadhaar's biometric database
  • Clean the electoral roll of fake and multiple registrations
  • Improve electoral integrity across India

Important: This linking is voluntary and not mandatory. Your voter ID will NOT be cancelled if you do not link it with Aadhaar.

  • All registered voters with a valid Aadhaar card and Voter ID
  • It is especially useful if you suspect duplicate registrations in your name
  • New voters can link during the registration process itself

Step 1: Visit the Portal

Go to voters.eci.gov.in and click on "Aadhaar Authentication" or "Form 6B".

Step 2: Login

  • Login with your registered mobile number and OTP
  • Or create a new account if you don't have one

Step 3: Enter Voter ID Details

  • Enter your EPIC number (Voter ID card number)
  • Your registered details will be fetched automatically

Step 4: Enter Aadhaar Number

  • Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number
  • Verify the details match (name, date of birth)

Step 5: OTP Verification

  • An OTP will be sent to your Aadhaar-registered mobile number
  • Enter the OTP to authenticate

Step 6: Submit

  • Confirm the linking
  • You will receive a confirmation message
  • Save the acknowledgement for your records

You can link your Voter ID with Aadhaar by sending an SMS.

SMS format:

UIDLINK <EPIC Number> <Aadhaar Number>

Send to: 166 or 51969 (check the latest number on eci.gov.in)

Example:

UIDLINK ABC1234567 123456789012

You will receive a confirmation SMS after successful linking.

Note: The SMS must be sent from the mobile number registered with your Aadhaar.

  2. Open the app and login with your mobile number

Important Tips

  1. Linking is voluntary — your voter ID will not be cancelled if you don't link
  2. Aadhaar-registered mobile number is needed for OTP verification during online linking
  3. Name mismatch may cause issues — if your name differs significantly between Voter ID and Aadhaar, update one of them first
  4. One Aadhaar can link to only one Voter ID — this helps eliminate duplicate registrations
  5. You can delink anytime — the process is reversible

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

No. Linking Voter ID with Aadhaar is voluntary. The Election Commission collects Aadhaar information to clean electoral rolls, but non-linking does not affect your voter registration or voting rights.

No. Your voter ID will not be cancelled for not linking with Aadhaar. However, if duplicates are found during electoral roll revision, the ECI may seek verification.

Q3. What is Form 6B?

Form 6B is the official form for furnishing Aadhaar number for Voter ID-Aadhaar linking. It can be submitted online at voters.eci.gov.in, through the Voter Helpline App, or offline at the ERO office.

Q4. My name is different in Voter ID and Aadhaar. Can I still link?

Minor spelling variations may be accepted. However, if the name is significantly different, it is recommended to first correct the name in either your Aadhaar card or Voter ID before attempting to link.

Each person must link their own Voter ID with their own Aadhaar. You cannot link on someone else's behalf online (as OTP goes to their Aadhaar-registered mobile). For offline linking, each person must sign their own Form 6B.

Yes. You can delink your Aadhaar from your Voter ID at any time through the voters.eci.gov.in portal or by contacting your ERO office. The linking is reversible.

Q7. What happens to my data after Aadhaar-Voter ID linking?

The ECI uses the Aadhaar data only for de-duplication of the electoral roll. As per the ECI's policy, Aadhaar data is kept confidential and is not shared with any third party. The linking is governed by the provisions of the Registration of Electors Rules.
