How to Renew Passport Online: Step-by-Step

Step 1: Visit Passport Seva Portal

Go to https://www.passportindia.gov.in/ and click on "Register Now" if you don't have an account, or "Existing User Login" if you already have one.

Step 2: Register / Log In

  1. Register with your email ID — this will be your login ID
  2. Set a password and complete registration
  3. Verify your email via the activation link
  4. Log in with your credentials

Step 3: Apply Online — Click "Apply for Re-issue of Passport"

  1. After login, click "Apply for Re-issue of Passport"
  2. Fill in the application form with your details:
    • Personal details (name, DOB, gender)
    • Family details (father/mother/spouse name)
    • Present and permanent address
    • Old passport details (number, issue date, expiry, place of issue)
    • Emergency contact
  3. Select reason for re-issue (validity expired, pages exhausted, change in details, etc.)

Step 4: Upload Documents

  • Upload self-attested copies of required documents
  • Supported formats: PDF, JPEG (max 1 MB per file)
  • Ensure documents are clear and legible

Step 5: Pay the Fee

  1. Click "Pay and Schedule Appointment"
  2. Pay ₹1,500 (36 pages) or ₹2,000 (60 pages) via:
    • Online: Credit card, debit card, net banking, UPI
    • Challan: SBI bank challan (pay at SBI branch within 24 hours)

Step 6: Book Appointment at PSK/POPSK

  1. Select Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) near you
  2. Choose an available date and time slot
  3. Confirm the appointment
  4. Download and print the appointment confirmation slip

Step 7: Visit PSK/POPSK on Appointment Date

Carry the following:

  1. Printed application receipt (ARN)
  2. Appointment confirmation slip
  3. Original documents + self-attested photocopies
  4. Old passport (original)

At the PSK:

  • Counter A: Document verification
  • Counter B: Biometrics (photo, fingerprint, signature)
  • Counter C: Final verification (Granting Officer)

Step 8: Police Verification

  • For passport renewal at the same address, police verification may be done post-issuance
  • For address change or other changes, police verification is done before issuance
  • A police officer will visit your address for verification

Step 9: Receive Your New Passport

  • Your new passport will be delivered via Speed Post to your registered address
  • Track status on the Passport Seva portal using your File Number

Tatkal Passport Renewal

For urgent renewal:

  1. Select "Tatkal" while filling the application form
  2. Pay the additional tatkal fee (total ₹3,500 for 36 pages)
  3. Provide proof of urgency (medical emergency, job requirement, etc.)
  4. Tatkal passports are typically issued within 1–3 working days after the PSK visit (subject to police verification)
