PhonePe UPI PIN Forgot? How to Reset Your UPI PIN
If you've forgotten your PhonePe UPI PIN, you can reset it easily using your debit card details. The UPI PIN is the 4-digit or 6-digit password required to authorize every UPI payment. This guide explains how to reset it step by step.
What is UPI PIN?
UPI PIN (Unified Payments Interface Personal Identification Number) is a secret passcode you create when you first set up UPI on PhonePe. It is required to:
- Authorize all UPI payments and transfers
- Check your bank account balance via UPI
- Confirm payment requests
Important: UPI PIN is different from your PhonePe app lock PIN or your ATM PIN. Each bank account linked to PhonePe has its own separate UPI PIN.
How to Reset UPI PIN on PhonePe (Step-by-Step)
Prerequisites
Before resetting your UPI PIN, keep the following ready:
- Your debit card (linked to the same bank account on PhonePe)
- Debit card last 6 digits and expiry date
- Registered mobile number (linked to your bank account) โ you'll receive an OTP via SMS
Steps to Reset UPI PIN
- Open the PhonePe app on your phone.
- Go to My Money > Bank Accounts.
- Select the bank account for which you want to reset the UPI PIN.
- Tap on "Forgot UPI PIN" or "Reset UPI PIN".
- Enter the last 6 digits of your debit card number.
- Enter the expiry date (month/year) of your debit card.
- Tap "Proceed" โ an OTP will be sent to your bank-registered mobile number.
- Enter the OTP received via SMS.
- Set a new UPI PIN โ enter a 4-digit or 6-digit PIN (depending on your bank).
- Confirm the new PIN by entering it again.
- You'll see a success message. Your new UPI PIN is now active.
If You Don't Have a Debit Card
A debit card is mandatory to set or reset your UPI PIN. If you don't have one:
- Request a debit card from your bank โ visit the nearest branch or apply online via net banking.
- Some banks issue virtual debit cards instantly through their mobile apps โ check if your bank offers this.
- Once you receive the debit card (physical or virtual), use the last 6 digits and expiry to reset your PIN.
Note: Credit cards cannot be used to set or reset UPI PIN.
Bank SMS Verification
When resetting your UPI PIN, your bank sends an OTP to verify your identity. Key points:
- The OTP is sent to the mobile number registered with your bank (not PhonePe).
- If your mobile number is not updated with the bank, you won't receive the OTP.
- The SIM card for your registered number must be inserted in the same phone you're using PhonePe on (some banks verify the device SIM).
- OTP is valid for 3โ10 minutes depending on the bank.
What if I don't receive the OTP?
- Ensure you have network signal on your registered mobile number.
- Wait 2โ3 minutes โ SMS delivery can be delayed.
- Check if your SMS inbox is full and clear old messages.
- Tap "Resend OTP" in the app.
- If still not received, contact your bank to verify your registered mobile number.
Common UPI PIN Reset Errors and Fixes
"Debit card details do not match"
- Double-check the last 6 digits and expiry date.
- Ensure you're using the debit card issued for the same bank account linked on PhonePe.
- If your debit card was recently replaced, use the new card details.
"OTP expired" or "Invalid OTP"
- Enter the OTP quickly โ it expires in a few minutes.
- Use the latest OTP if you received multiple.
- Don't close the app while waiting for OTP.
"UPI PIN reset failed โ bank error"
- Your bank's UPI server may be down. Wait 30 minutes and try again.
- If repeated failures, contact your bank's customer care.
"Maximum attempts exceeded"
- After 3โ5 failed attempts, UPI PIN reset is blocked temporarily.
- Wait 24 hours and try again, or contact your bank.
"Mobile number not registered"
- Your SIM card number doesn't match your bank records.
- Visit your bank branch to update your mobile number.
- After updating, wait 24โ48 hours for the change to reflect in UPI systems.
How to Change UPI PIN (If You Know Current PIN)
If you remember your current UPI PIN but want to change it:
- Open PhonePe > My Money > Bank Accounts.
- Select the bank account.
- Tap "Change UPI PIN".
- Enter your current UPI PIN.
- Enter your new UPI PIN.
- Confirm the new PIN. Done!
Important Tips

- Change your UPI PIN every few months for security.
- If you suspect unauthorized access, reset your UPI PIN immediately.
- Keep your debit card details handy (or saved securely) for future PIN resets.
