What is PM Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY)?

Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) is a central government maternity benefit programme under the Ministry of Women and Child Development. It provides a cash benefit of ₹5,000 directly to the bank account of pregnant and lactating women for the first living child.

The scheme compensates for wage loss during pregnancy and childbirth, and encourages safe delivery, good nutrition, and breastfeeding practices. Originally launched in 2010 as Indira Gandhi Matritva Sahyog Yojana, it was renamed PMMVY in 2017 and expanded nationwide across all districts of India.

PMMVY is a conditional cash transfer — the benefit is released in installments linked to specific health conditions like registration, ante-natal check-ups, and child birth registration.

Who is Eligible for PMMVY?

To receive the PMMVY benefit, a woman must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Age: 19 years or above at the time of pregnancy
  • First live birth: The benefit applies to the first living child of the family
  • Employment: Not employed in the central or state government, or in any public sector undertaking (those already receiving maternity benefits from employer are excluded)
  • Registration: Must register at an Anganwadi Centre (AWC) or an approved health facility

Note: Women who experience miscarriage or stillbirth are eligible to claim the benefit again in a future pregnancy, as the condition is "first live birth."

Who is NOT Eligible?

  • Women employed in government or PSU jobs receiving paid maternity leave
  • Women who have already received PMMVY benefit for their first child
  • Second or subsequent pregnancies (unless the first resulted in no live birth)

PMMVY Benefit Amount — ₹5,000 in 3 Installments

The total cash benefit of ₹5,000 is paid in three installments, each linked to a specific condition:

Installment Amount Condition
1st Installment ₹1,000 Early registration of pregnancy at AWC or health facility (within 150 days of LMP)
2nd Installment ₹2,000 At least one ante-natal check-up after 6 months of pregnancy
3rd Installment ₹2,000 Child birth is registered and the child has received the first cycle of vaccination (BCG, OPV, DPT, Hepatitis B)

Total: ₹5,000. Additionally, eligible women who deliver in a government or accredited hospital also receive ₹1,000 under the Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY), making the effective benefit ₹6,000.

Documents Required for PMMVY

Keep these documents ready before applying:

  • Aadhaar card of the beneficiary (mother)
  • Aadhaar card of the husband/family member
  • Bank account passbook (account must be in the woman's name or joint account)
  • MCP card (Mother and Child Protection card) issued by the health facility
  • Identity proof (Voter ID, PAN, or driving licence — if Aadhaar is not available)
  • Pregnancy registration certificate from AWC or health facility
  • Child birth certificate (for 3rd installment)
  • Vaccination record of the child (for 3rd installment)

Bank Account & Aadhaar Linking

The PMMVY benefit is transferred via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) into your bank account. Ensure:

  • Your bank account is linked to your Aadhaar number
  • The account is active and has correct IFSC details
  • If you don't have a bank account, open one under PM Jan Dhan Yojana — it's free and requires only Aadhaar
  • You can link Aadhaar to your bank account by visiting the bank branch with your Aadhaar card

How to Apply for PMMVY

There are two ways to apply — offline at Anganwadi Centre or online through the PMMVY-CAS portal.

Option 1: Apply at Anganwadi Centre (Offline)

  1. Visit your nearest Anganwadi Centre (AWC) or approved health facility
  2. Carry all required documents (Aadhaar, bank passbook, MCP card)
  3. Fill out the PMMVY application form (Form 1-A for first installment, Form 1-B for second, Form 1-C for third)
  4. The Anganwadi worker or ANM (Auxiliary Nurse Midwife) will help you fill and submit the form
  5. Collect the acknowledgement receipt with your registration number
  6. Repeat the process for 2nd and 3rd installments when eligible

Option 2: Apply Online via PMMVY-CAS Portal

  1. Visit the official portal: pmmvy.wcd.gov.in
  2. Click on "Beneficiary Login" or register as a new user
  3. Enter your mobile number and verify with OTP
  4. Fill in your personal details, pregnancy details, and bank information
  5. Upload scanned copies of required documents
  6. Submit the application and note down your registration ID
  7. Apply for subsequent installments through the same portal

Tip: The online portal (PMMVY-CAS or PMMVY Soft MIS) allows women to independently apply without visiting an Anganwadi centre. However, if you face issues, visiting the AWC is recommended.

How to Track PMMVY Application Status

You can check the status of your application and installment payments:

  • Online: Log in to pmmvy.wcd.gov.in with your registered mobile number and check under "Application Status"
  • Via Anganwadi Worker: Contact your local AWC and share your registration number
  • Helpline: Call the Women Helpline at 181 or the PMMVY helpline for your state
  • UMANG App: The PMMVY service is also available on the UMANG app for status tracking

What if Your PMMVY Claim is Rejected?

If your application is rejected or an installment is not credited:

  1. Check the rejection reason on the portal or through your Anganwadi worker — common reasons include Aadhaar mismatch, incomplete documents, or bank account issues
  2. Correct the error — update your Aadhaar details, re-link your bank account, or submit missing documents
  3. Re-apply with corrected information at the AWC or online portal
  4. Escalate if the issue persists — contact the District Programme Officer (DPO) or the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) of your block
  5. File a grievance on the portal or through the Centralized Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS)

Common rejection reasons: Aadhaar not linked to bank, duplicate application, incorrect pregnancy dates, missing vaccination proof, or applying for second child.

Important Points to Remember

  • If you have a girl child, you can also benefit from Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana for her future education and marriage savings
