What is PM Suraksha Bima Yojana?

Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) is a government-backed accidental death and disability insurance scheme at an extremely affordable premium of just ₹20 per year (approximately ₹1.67 per month).

Key features:

  • Coverage: ₹2 lakh on accidental death or total permanent disability
  • Coverage: ₹1 lakh on partial permanent disability
  • Premium: ₹20/year — auto-debited on June 1
  • Available to all savings bank account holders
  • No medical examination required
  • Renewable annually

Who is Eligible?

  • Age: 18 to 70 years
  • Must have a savings bank account or Jan Dhan account
  • Aadhaar should be linked to the bank account (recommended)

Note: Unlike PMJJBY (which covers only up to age 50), PMSBY covers up to 70 years — making it especially valuable for older adults.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does PMSBY cover death due to illness?

No — PMSBY only covers accidental death. Death due to illness, disease, or natural causes is not covered. For that, enroll in PMJJBY.

What if my bank account has no balance on June 1?

The auto-debit of ₹20 will fail and your policy will lapse. Keep at least ₹20 in your account on May 31–June 1 each year.

Can I have PMSBY from multiple bank accounts?

You can enroll from multiple accounts, but you can claim from only one policy per accident event. Duplicate claims are not allowed.

I already had an accident before enrolling. Will it be covered?

No — only accidents occurring after the policy start date (enrollment or June 1, whichever is applicable) are covered.

Is there a waiting period?

There is no general waiting period for PMSBY. Coverage starts from the date of enrollment.

Can a housewife or farmer enroll?

Yes — anyone with a savings bank account aged 18–70 can enroll, regardless of occupation or employment status.
