What is PMSMA?

Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA) is a Government of India programme under the National Health Mission (NHM) that provides free, quality antenatal care (ANC) on the 9th of every month to all pregnant women across India.

The key goal: catch high-risk pregnancies early and ensure every pregnant woman gets a doctor's checkup, not just an ANM's visit.

  • Caste or religion

PMSMA is specifically aimed at women who are in the 2nd and 3rd trimester — but 1st trimester women are also welcome.

When and Where to Go

  • Date: 9th of every month (if 9th is a holiday, the camp is held on the next working day)
  • Where: Government health centres, sub-centres, CHCs, PHCs, district hospitals
  • Doctor: MBBS doctors, obstetricians, gynaecologists (empanelled under PMSMA)
  • Private doctors: Many private doctors voluntarily participate — called "PMSMA partners"

Finding a PMSMA Camp Near You

  1. Go to pmsma.nhm.gov.in
  2. Click "Facility Locator"
  3. Enter your state and district
  4. View the list of PMSMA-empanelled facilities near you

How to Use PMSMA (No Registration Needed)

  1. Just show up at any PMSMA-empanelled facility on the 9th of the month
  2. Bring your Mother and Child Protection (MCP) card if you have one (or Aadhaar card)
  3. Get your checkup done by the doctor
  4. The doctor will record findings in your MCP card and on the PMSMA sticker
  5. Red sticker = high-risk pregnancy → referred to higher facility
  6. Green sticker = normal → continue regular ANC

PMSMA Sticker (Colour Coding)

Sticker Colour Meaning Action
Green Normal pregnancy Continue regular ANC at the same facility
Red High-risk pregnancy Referred to FRU (First Referral Unit) / district hospital

If you get a red sticker, the facility must help you get referred — they provide a referral slip and coordinate with the higher facility.

Documents to Bring

  • MCP card (Mother and Child Protection card — issued when you first registered your pregnancy)
  • Aadhaar card (for identification if MCP card not available)
  • Previous ANC records, if any

If you don't have an MCP card, you can register your pregnancy on the spot.

Frequently Asked Questions

I missed registration at my nearest PHC. Can I still attend PMSMA?

Yes — PMSMA is open to all pregnant women whether or not previously registered at that facility. Simply go to the camp on the 9th.

Is ultrasound available at every PMSMA camp?

Ultrasound is available at higher-facility camps (CHC/district hospitals). Not all sub-centre or PHC camps may have ultrasound. The pmsma.nhm.gov.in facility locator shows which sites have ultrasound.

Can I go to any district's PMSMA camp, not just my own?

Yes — PMSMA is open to all pregnant women regardless of which district or state they live in. You don't need to be registered in that district.

What happens if I get a red sticker at PMSMA?

A red sticker means a high-risk complication (anaemia, hypertension, diabetes, multiple pregnancy, etc.) was detected. You will be referred to a First Referral Unit (FRU) or district hospital for specialized care. Follow up with the referral — it's important for your safety.

Is PMSMA the same as Janani Suraksha Yojana?

No. PMSMA is about antenatal checkup (during pregnancy). JSY is about cash assistance for institutional delivery (after childbirth at a government hospital). Both can be used together.
