What is Dr. Ambedkar Post Matric Scholarship for OBC?
Dr. Ambedkar Post Matric Scholarship for Other Backward Class (OBC) Students is a central government scholarship run by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment that supports OBC students pursuing education after Class 10 (post-matriculation).
Named after Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, this scholarship provides:
- Maintenance allowance for living expenses during study
- Tuition fee reimbursement (for government institutions and some private)
- Coverage from Class 11 through PG and professional courses
Who is Eligible?
- Must belong to OBC (Other Backward Class) — as notified by central/state government
- Annual family income: below ₹1 lakh (Note: this is significantly lower than SC/ST scholarship's ₹2.5L limit)
- Must be pursuing post-matriculation level education (Class 11 and above)
- Studying in a government, government-aided, or government-recognised institution
- Not receiving any other central/state scholarship for the same purpose
Scholarship Amount — Maintenance Allowance
| Course Level | Hosteller (₹/month) | Day Scholar (₹/month) |
|---|---|---|
| Class 11 and 12 | ₹350 | ₹150 |
| Undergraduate non-professional (BA, B.Sc, B.Com) | ₹350 | ₹150 |
| Undergraduate professional (B.Tech, MBBS, MBA) | ₹425 | ₹190 |
| Postgraduate / Research | ₹510 | ₹230 |
Plus:
- Tuition fee reimbursement (actual fee charged, subject to caps)
- Books and stationery allowance per course group
- Study tour allowance for applicable courses
Note: The OBC scholarship amounts are lower than the SC/ST scholarship amounts because OBC families tend to have slightly higher income floors. The income limit (₹1 lakh) is also stricter.

Key Difference: Central OBC Scholarship vs State OBC Scholarship
Many states also run their own OBC scholarships (state-funded) with different income limits and amounts:
| Feature | Central (Dr. Ambedkar OBC) | State OBC Scholarships |
|---|---|---|
| Income limit | ₹1 lakh/year | ₹1–2.5 lakh (varies by state) |
| Amount | Lower | Often higher in some states |
| Administered by | NSP / Central + state | State portal |
Check your state's social welfare portal for state OBC scholarships — they may have higher income limits and better amounts.
Frequently Asked Questions
My family income is ₹1.2 lakh. Am I eligible?
No — the income limit is strictly below ₹1 lakh per year. This is significantly stricter than SC/ST scholarships (₹2.5L). If your income is above ₹1L, check your state's OBC scholarship which may have a higher limit.
I am in an OBC state list but not in the central OBC list. Am I eligible?
The scholarship eligibility is based on central OBC list. If your community is listed in the state OBC list but not the central OBC list, you may not qualify for this central scholarship. Check your OBC certificate — it should specify whether it is for state or central OBC.
Can I get both this scholarship and a state OBC scholarship?
You cannot receive two scholarships for the same purpose. Choose the better one — either the central scheme (if income < ₹1L) or your state scheme (if income ₹1–2.5L).
When will I receive the payment?
After NSP submission, the institution and state verify the application. Payment typically arrives 3–6 months into the academic year. Delays are common — follow up with your state social welfare department.
My institution is not listed on NSP. What to do?
Your institution must register on NSP. Ask your college administration to contact the state education/social welfare department for NSP registration.
