What is SBI Nomination?

Nomination in an SBI bank account allows you to designate a person (nominee) who will receive the account balance in the event of the account holder's death. Under the Banking Regulation Act, every bank account holder should register a nominee. SBI allows up to two nominees with customizable percentage splits.

Why is Nomination Important?

  • Smooth claim settlement: Nominee can claim the balance without lengthy legal proceedings
  • Mandatory for insurance: Linked insurance benefits require a valid nominee
  • RBI advisory: RBI encourages all bank account holders to register nominees
  • Avoids family disputes: Clear nomination prevents confusion among legal heirs

Who Can Be a Nominee?

  • Any individual (family member, friend, or any person)
  • Minor nominees are allowed โ€” but a guardian must be appointed
  • NRI account holders can also nominate
  • For joint accounts, nomination activates after the death of all account holders

Important Tips

  1. Register a nominee immediately after opening a bank account โ€” don't delay
  2. Update nomination when life events occur (marriage, birth of child, death of existing nominee)
  3. Nomination is not the same as a will โ€” legal heirs can still contest; but nomination ensures quick initial settlement
  4. Keep acknowledgement safe โ€” it's proof that nomination was registered
  5. Check nomination status periodically via YONO or net banking under account details
